Alright, I don't think this is technically a doujin game, since it's an arcade release and such, but seriously... this arcade fighter based on Koihime Musou is GORGEOUS. I wish there was some way to emulate it... or hell, some what for me to find a PCB for it. I want this game so bad.

Watch in 720p!

This seems like an interesting fighter, but how do we play it :?

I tried to find something, but all that I got so far is this very NSFW hentai visual novel of Shin Koihime Mosou

However, here is the arcade version's official site.

Oh, and the full title (for future searching) is apparently:
Shin Koihime Musou 〜Otome Taisen ★ Sangokushi Engi〜

I find it little lame, that the Japan is fixated in softcore pornographic content and cute anime style. I like Japanese mecha and sci-fi games, as those have by nature grittier style.

What are Japanese "mainstream genres" then? They like to play a lot of RPG's at least. Does anything else float their boat? Are Western games cool and exotic there?

J T wrote:Thanks Dylan! Your description of the main battle mechanic has me eager to try this game. I tried to download the trial version from the links you posted, but the link is no longer active. I did, however, find some archived stuff and here is an older version of the PC trial for those interested:

Trouble Witches Neo
Whoops, thanks for the link. I didn't think to try and download the demo myself.

Just picked up a bunch of doujin shmups from rancor:

Alltynex Second
Diadra Empty
RefleX
RefRain
Trouble Witches

All of them are highly recommended. :D Especially Diadra Empty. Everyone should try it out. Starts off a bit slow but the game and music pick up very quickly!

Don't let the cute graphics and cheery music fool you. This game is a middle finger from the designer to you. Yes, this is one of those masochist games where the designer has covered the environment with traps and pitfalls that beguile your usual gamer instincts and force you to learn patience and timing to make progress. Watch the video or try the demo to see what I mean.

Hatoful Boyfriend

I'm adding this game simply for the huge WTF factor. Visual novels often tell the story of a boy who somehow ends up at a school academy full of anime schoolgirls that he then gets romantically involved with. Take that trope, and now replace the anime schoolgirls with pigeons and you have Hatoful Boyfriend. Yes, this is a man-on-pigeon dating sim. :?

The game is in Japanese, but you can watch the first ten minutes translated to English and download the demos by following the links in this story at GameSetWatch:

Essentially a Mega Man tribute (with an all female cast of course), RKS sticks very closely with the established Mega Man conventions. 8 stages, 8 weapons, and a final gauntlet at the end. The game doesn't pay tribute to just Mega Man either, you'll observe a lot of nods and references to other games both obscure and popular. Simply put, if you like Mega Man you'll have a good time with this game. A final thing thing worth noting is the superb soundtrack, with a massive number of tracks and varied styles of music.
