What do you call them then? There are certain boundaries between Rock, Alternative, and Metal that are just really blurry to me.

Progressive Rock... with some latin-jazz influence... they've said they're "a salsa band that wants to be a rock band" ...there isn't anything about them that is even remotely "metal"... seriously, I can't think of 10 seconds from any song of theirs that sounds a little bit metal. I have all their albums.

Rock and alternative sounds are definitely in there. But their overall sound and composition is, in a nutshell, "Progressive."

The guitarist and singer are from At The Drive In, they were an Alternative band to some, but a lot agree that they were one of the first big "emo" acts... (just some background info)

But going through the Mars Volta's discography, briefly anyway... we have a psychedelic prog ep, a psychedelic prog album, a prog album with lot's of latin instrumentation and some more psychedelic stuff, and then the next few just got more "rock" but maintained the progressive structures and psychedelic guitar effects... The guitarist made a bunch of psychedelic prog rock albums with some avant-garde tendencies on the side...

Mars Volta = Psychedelic Prog Rock with some Latin Jazz Influence... being a huge MV fan, that's a simple as I can see it as far as what "genre" they are.

I saw Buckethead maybe about 6 years ago. My dear god.....

It was a surreal show. I guess it was his birthday (or at least the scary MC guy said it was on stage) so in the middle of guitar solos he would bend down and give people in the audience action figures while ripping it on guitar. He also had this elastic type guitar strap, almost like a bike inner tube, and he was bending his guitar out all crazy and snapping it back. Heavy ass show.

I've always wanted to see him live, but it seems like every time he comes to town it is an inconvenient time for me. I've watched plenty of live video though. He's got a crazy persona. He's this weird mix of horrorshow and childishness.

i saw buckethead play with primus once. it was amazing. absolutely amazing.

Yeah I was going to chime in on The Mars Volta. I heard them on Circa Survive radio on Pandora, and Circa is the furthest from metal you can get. Don't get me wrong, the song you posted is still pretty damn amazing.

Mars Volta is ok. The first time I actually heard their music is when I saw them live cause they opened up for System of a Down a few years ago. They are pretty awesome live.

When I was in high school, this would've been my dream show. Primus was my favorite band for like 5 years.

Just throwin this out there...

Even tho rap metal was pretty much a bad idea and I'm pretty sure no one misses it, there were some legitimate acts amongst the fodder. Deftones, though not typically considered "rap metal", they wrote a few songs that showed some considerable hip hop influence. As far as I've heard, they came at the same time Korn did, but it's a common misconception (or so I think I read on Wiki) that they came after Korn as if suggesting Korn had anything to do with the reason Deftones achieved success. Reason for saying this: Deftones are close in style to "numetal", but through what I'd have to call sheer musical ingenuity, they've created a beast of a sound that is mightier, more soulful, and absolutely more creative than a typical "numetal band"s sound. Which brings me to my preferred "genre label" (for sake of conversation) for the Deftones, it makes sense to me to refer to them as "alternative metal". They blend elements of alternative sounds and elements of crushing metalness (alt-metal) and all being conveyed through their crafty hands and vocal chords. Their choices in covers were apparently chosen because that's the music that shaped them as musicians (you can catch a handful of those off their B-Sides and Rarites compilation). Bottom line, they're far from generic. And the full circle closes at this: they're not "rap metal".

However, for whatever's sake, I nominate one of their songs as the best rap metal song EVER.
Engine No. 9 ... it's a little hard to understand this singer if you're not already into them, I think, but when your ears start to catch every syllable and rhythmic embellishment you really start to hear how damn sick it is. Not to mention, this bastard can sing and has one of the sickest screams I've ever heard. Either way, these riffs are hard to disagree with. Here it is.... It's off their first album Adrenaline, came out in '95. (If only I could have heard this in 5th grade)
