I might pirate games to try them out, cause I've been burned too many times by games every reviewer adored and I hated and there was no demo available on PSN (GTA4, Fallout 3, Mercenaries 2, Red Faction ect. ect.)

This too I would like to inquire about. Anyone know?

Yes, because it works on 3.55. There is no exploit you just run a signed app from a memory stick or from your hdd should you install it.

In related news the same 'hack' works on PSP. So you can sign and run any code on any PSP now. Awesome sauce.

So this is really great news. :D So I wonder how long it will be before emu writers will port or get their emus running on the PS3.

I currently use my dual booted Mac Book Pro to be my emu machine. I would love to have all my various emus from both Windows and OS X to be on the PS3 to use that when I want to play on a TV, because hooking up an NES or whatever to a 1080p HDTV and it just wont cut it, even with extensive modding. But an emulator can make it look it look decent and spiffy and whatnot. Especially if I can transfer save states from my laptop to my PS3. Oh man. Just the thought of playing Final Fantasy VI on my laptop on the train or whatever, then continue on my PS3 (even though I know I won't) is a great idea.

Maybe it's just the way it's been explained in the thread, or maybe it's my take on it, but anyone else think this crack might do more good to the PS3 than bad?

I mean, sure, people are gonna want it for free games, that's a given, but now, you can play all of these different games via emulators. Won't people see the PS3 as a better system since it can do all this? Because as I've heard from here, it emulates games better than the oxbox.

Something its competitors - The 360 and Wii, can not and WILL not do..
And I say this as a longtime Nintendo and Microsoft fan! This is going to be HUGE for Sony!

I'd like to expand on this if I may...

And if they are not selling at a loss anymore; did they ever make the money back for the consoles they produced?

We now have custom firmware.

http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/01/kakaroto- ... z1ABBm9FsS

This will work on any firmware, so you can have it on 3.41 and keep your dongle based hack functioning for current unsigned homebrew and backup managers. Or you can update to 3.55, run the script and have the ability to install PKG files. However there is currently no homebrew officially released as retail-signed PKGs so far. It's only a matter of time though. I'm going to have a blast at compiling some retail PKGs from source and see if they will work on a non-service mode 3.41. If so I'm gonna compile the hell out of stuff and update to 3.55 so I can get back on PSN.
