Tbh I don't think the n64 official controller was really all that bad. A bit weird, sure, but functional and not completely uncomfortable (for me at least).
The gamecube controller was beautiful to hold and use if you weren't playing anything that needed the d-pad.

The Gamecube controller, despite being a mess to look at, was actually very intuitive and comfortable IMO. Except the D-pad. But bad D-pads are no stranger to the video game world.

The dumb thing is that Nintendo invented the D-pad and the SNES one was awesome. The N64 one was ok, just never used. The GBA and later for their handhelds and GC and later ones for their consoles are terrible tiny pieces of crap.

I was amazed when I discovered that the gamecube d-pad and GBA d-pad are 100 percent identical.

I can at least understand the problem with the GC D-pad even if I dont have trouble myself due to its size and placement. But the wii, gba sp and ds dpads have never been a problem for me. I love those things :S
Still, my vote for best D-pad ever would probably go to the saturn. I love that funky looking thing.

the DS phat's D-pad is excellent. But playing Mario Kart on the DS lite hurts my thumb.

I cant speak for the DSLite pad, but the DSi one has never given me any problems.
Re: Saturn vs. N64 FIGHT!
N64. These are really really different systems so in the end it comes down to the types of games you like. I had an N64 during its heydey (would've gotten a saturn had they relased a sonic game) so nostalgia might be part of it. I love my saturn but most the games feel more shallow. If you like RPGs you'll probably disagree, but I don't play rpgs. I also don't like fighting games. So that pretty much removes any chance the saturn had of winning for me. If you have to have every shoot em up ever made and like importing them the saturn would win. But for me Mario 64 > Nights, Mario Kart > Sonic R, Mischief makers > Astal. Then there's diddy kong racing, goldeneye, bomberman hero, yoshi's story. . . .
