Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 (GC). I had this for a while now, but it got shoved in the back because Ultimate Ninja 5 on the PS2 seduced me with its epic desperation moves. I just found out now that Taisen 4 has deeper gameplay even if the specials suck arse. It's like the style vs substance thingie again.

I have heard that the XBLA port didn't fair so well. Acquaintances have told me the controls are off and moves are difficult to pull off. Even with a good arcade stick. Issues that were not present in the PS2 release.the7k wrote:Really? I loved KOF2002UM on the PS2, which says a lot considering I hated the original KOF2002.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:KoF 2002: UM..

Yeah, the controls are a bit wanky, and I was looking forward to playing online for this one, (of course I should have known better, given SNK's track record for terrible netcode.)wip3outguy7 wrote:I have heard that the XBLA port didn't fair so well. You guys mention the PS2 version.. Did this get released in the US on the PS2? I thought they only released KOF '98 UM.

No, it never got a PS2 release - but anyone who knows me well knows that has never stopped me before.Rurouni_Fencer wrote: Yeah, the controls are a bit wanky, and I was looking forward to playing online for this one, (of course I should have known better, given SNK's track record for terrible netcode.)

By the way, have you checked out Neo Geo Battle Coliseum on XBLA? I don't have XBLA, but from everyone I've talked to, they've said the netplay is perfect - better than SSF4, even. I was kinda hoping that meant that SNK finally cracked the code, so to speak.

Oh yeah, I loved it so much on the PS2 I bought it again for XBLA for the achievements! Haven't tried online yet, but hearing that, I'm going to give it a look tonight, (of course, here's hoping somebody out there in Xbox land is feeling the same way..)the7k wrote: No, it never got a PS2 release - but anyone who knows me well knows that has never stopped me before.

If it's as good as you were told, then they learned nothing when they made 2002: UM. It's not as bad as KoF XII, but it's still about a second behind from what I've experienced.
Re: What fighter are you currently playing?
So I've been playing Brutal: Paws of Fury lately on the SNES. And I can confirm without a doubt that I absolutely hate this game. Ok, so I can put up with the shoddy hit detection, and I've discovered that you can eventually get used to the horrendous controls. Blocking is still a bit of a strange experience, but it can be done. The "learn new special moves" aspect is nice in theory, but it doesn't really work when your opponent has access to all of theirs. But by being cheap, I've discovered that it's actually rather easy to get through this game.
Up until the final boss.
Seriously, the boss would make SNK feel proud. I've seen him do five things: jump, punch, headbutt (which I assume is a stronger punch), taunt (which restores health in this game, including for the final boss), and then some kind of unblockable special move in which he becomes invincible and can move across the length of the screen in a couple of seconds. The computer can apparently do this at will and enjoys spamming it as much as possible. It wouldn't be so bad, but it also stuns you and goes off faster than you can jump if you're right next to it, so if you end up knocked in a corner, which will likely happen if he hits you with this attack, you're going to die. That's it, plain and simple.
I'd love to develop a strategy to fight him, but I only get three continues. After that, it's back to the start of the game, where I once again have to fight everyone else to get back to the boss. Maybe this would be entertaining if the game were good, but I've literally spammed low kicks and made it to the final boss after perfecting every other fighter on both rounds. That's not exactly what I call quality.
So here's to you, crappy fighting game boss. I hope whoever programmed you dies in a fire.

Hokuto no ken (PS2)
Uses the same engine as Guilty Gear, so it's a pretty solid and good-looking 2D fighter. It just loses a lot of appeal because it doesn't quite capture the feel of the manga/anime. It's extremely lacking in violence and gore, for one thing. I wanted to make people's heads explode, damnit.
Also, Raoh is very, very cheap.

I have been playing this weird turn-based fighting game called Toribash.
You take turns contracting, relaxing, and moving different muscles to slowly craft whatever body movement you want. So you might take 3 or 4 turns getting your character to knee the other in the groin, then take 5 or 6 turns to build the movements for an uppercut. At the end, you watch it all play out in real-time and hope you tore your opponents head off.
