Hey was that new star trek movie any good? I wanted to see that. I never watched any of the shows before though. That was my brothers thing.

Good thing I've got the proper version on DVD.Limewater wrote:Also, MrPopo, haven't you seen the latest version of the "original" trilogy? Yes, it definitely has been made worse.Ack wrote:The taint of Ep. 1-3 is pretty harsh to wash off. Oh goodness. This thread is on Star Trek now.
When is part 2 going to be released? Or is it already?

Yes, it's good as a fun big-budget blockbuster film. They made the mistake of casting Winona Ryder as Spock's mom, though. That part of the film is really weird and distracting. I don't have anything personally against Winona Ryder-- I generally like her in movies. It was just bad casting.NathanBarnatt wrote:Hey was that new star trek movie any good? I wanted to see that. The new movies was awful but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. *shrug*

I think of it kind of like the Mission:Impossible movie. It's not really true to the spirit of the source material, but if you can get over that it's a fun movie.lOctopod wrote:The new movies was awful but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. *shrug*

I could see that. Specially for people that never got into Star Trek like Nathan. Then I guess it is just something new for them anyhow.Limewater wrote:I think of it kind of like the Mission:Impossible movie. With the Trek reboot they fundamentally ditched the entire premise of 'exploration' and turned the show into another good-guys-vs-bad-guys scifi warfare. Truth be told the show was always like this but now with this reboot it seems the emphasis is on interstellar warfare.

My main problem was not so much that they did a reboot, even though that is dumb too, but really the whole plot. The story was stupid as hell. But it was an action film so I guess the story was secondary.

Yeah, the story was pretty stupid, and the plot holes were huge.Octopod wrote:My main problem was not so much that they did a reboot, even though that is dumb too, but really the whole plot. The story was stupid as hell. But it was an action film so I guess the story was secondary.
I don't see a problem with the reboot idea, though, especially since they established it as an alternate timeline while acknowledging the original series. It allows them to make a lot of changes without completely alienating the fanbase.
And honestly, I don't think that the themes of the original series or the Next Generation would really translate that well to film without the audience coming in with a lot of background knowledge about the characters and the world they live in. The exploration theme works a lot better for a television show, in my opinion.
