With the Atari and NES, they could monitor my gaming time. With the GB, they thought I'd take it to school and slack off in general.

So when I played the Gameboy, it was usually in my bed, on a Saturday morning.
Wow, I guess I have cool parents. My grandma got me a GB for Christmas in '89; I was the first kid in my class to get one! I remember that my mom and dad made me play soccer to get outside, even though I hated sports then. For the first half of my debut season I just stood on the field doing nothing really, I simply didn't care. Embarrassed, my dad came up with a great idea: Bribe me. He told me that for every goal I scored he would buy me a GameBoy game. I got three goals late in the season after that. It netted (pun intended) me F-1 Race, Mortal Kombat and Primal Rage! I would go on to play soccer all the way through high school after that; despite no longer being bribed with games per goal (I ended up playing defense-sweeper-anyway).

I lost it over the years, but was Primal Rage as bad as I remember? It is possible I just really sucked at it, but I don't remember there being any form of combos or anything like that, just mash buttons and pray that you win.

Yeah I got my GB for Christmas 89 as well. Along with a copy of Super Mario Land. Which I still love to this day. Then if I remember correctly, I got Motocross Maniacs, and TMNT: Fall Of The Foot Clan with Xmas money right after that.

At any rate, I never knew there was a port of Primal Rage on GB! I'm gonna have to check that out.

Sounds like you have cooler Grandparents.

Your Father should have bribed you to play a better sport.

Ha ha. I just think it's funny that bribing me with games was the way I came to really, honestly like the sport.

Another god awful game I remember liking to play was an FMV cowboy shooter on the PC called Mad Dog McCree. It's worth playing just for the Undertaker's comments when you die. They also released a port for the Wii with the sequels included. Pick it up for some cheap laughs if you find it, it's only like 15 or 20 bucks new. Bad game though.

So, lately, I've been watching YouTube videos of different FMV games. It's funny just how awesomely bad some of these games were. I found this guy on YouTube that does a great job of reviewing awful games named Spoony One. Here's his YouTube channel:

I recommend starting with this video:

(By the way, Phantasmagoria, which he talks about here, was just re-released on GOG.com)

Yeah, Spoony's take on the Make My Video games was nothing short of epic. The C&C Music Factory one was disturbing.

Spoony is pretty great. He's part of the AVGN, Nostalgia Critic crew.

His voice over on the dungeons and dragons boardgame VHS tape is hilarious.

I like to play a campy little PSX title called "Project Overkill". Imagine an isometric TPS where you kill monsters continuously. The only problem with the game is that the whole building seems to be completely and totally out of ammo, making it extremely hard to beat the game.
