That pic reminded me of the episode of family guy where brian is annoying stewie with his understanding and appreciation for the humor of political cartoons.

*yes, I realize how racist my comment looked, but I'm speaking from experience. I've been to China a few times and it really is dirty and has a done of people that bother tourists trying to rip them off left and right! Try climbing on the Great Wall just to have some local jacka$$ try to sell you crappy t-shirts, trinkets and jewelry when you're trying to take in the impressive scenery and you'll agree with me. That goes for any east Asian country other than Korea, Japan or Singapore (I assume, I've never been to Singapore).

My mother is Chinese, which makes me half. Yes, you do sound like just another narrow-minded racist prick. Are you Chinese? No. Have you LIVED in China? No. Simply visiting China and looking like another tourist that can easily be swindled does not give you the right to talk down about an entire nation nor does it give you any right to spew your ignorant bigotry. The fact that you "realized" what you said was racist and still said it just makes you look more like a prick. It's like those non-Asians who have Asian girlfriends/wives who think they can put down Asians just because they are romantically involved with an Asian. They don't have a free pass.

When I go to China to visit family, I never have the problems you speak of. Nobody tries to swindle me, nobody tries to sell me junk. The same goes for when I go to Hong Kong, Saigon, Bangkok, and Manila. It's all about how you carry yourself. But hey, I know sometimes you just can't help not looking like a local. When I went to India, it happened sometimes. But you know what? I don't talk down about the Indian people just because a few people who are just trying to earn a living were trying to sell me things I don't want. I just simply ignored them.

Oh, and trust me, Japan can be worse. It doesn't happen on the street or at tourist traps. It happens at meetings between Japanese and foreign companies. I served as a translator in a couple of these meetings and the American companies had no idea how badly the Japanese company was swindling them out of a deal made to look fair and reasonable. The Japanese, as you know, are notorious for under-handed business dealings. But hey, I don't hate the Japanese as a whole, just a few select individuals. They just happen to be Japanese.

Did I strike a cord?

My aunt is Chinese, which makes my cousins have. They all live in China and I've stayed with them a few times on some of my trips. Not that it probably counts for anything, though.
So... you're half Chinese and when you're in east Asian countries you don't get harassed to buy junk so much, but when you're in India you do? Perhaps it's because you look somewhat local and you're surrounded by local family, but you aren't when you're in India? Just a guess.
But you know what? I don't talk down about the Indian people just because a few people who are just trying to earn a living were trying to sell me things I don't want. I just simply ignored them.
You go to Japan or Korea, and people don't usually try to literally step in your path, physically grab you, and try to sell you trinkets, t-shirts, postcards, etc, while this does happen in a lot of other Asian counties. I find it annoying. It's just how it is in those countries. Racist? Perhaps I should've said "culturalist"? I'm not annoyed at hawkers in China or wherever because they're Chinese. It's because it's a part of Chinese culture, a part of Chinese culture that I happen to dislike. This same part of the culture also results in a relatively high ratio of people scamming junk on internet sites like this one.
Oh, and trust me, Japan can be worse.
For the average tourist or shopper? No, it's not worse. Even most Chinese people I know agree with me there. One of my best friends living in Japan is Chinese. He says the same thing as I do.
It doesn't happen on the street or at tourist traps. It happens at meetings between Japanese and foreign companies.
Which isn't at all the point I was originally complaining about.
Most Japanese companies, in my experience, won't feel an ounce of guilt skirting the law, cheating lying to their employees or business partners if it will benefit them and they don't think they'll get caught. It's shame they want to avoid, not guilt (as you definitely know). I don't think they have a conscious. Yet, I don't hate Japan as a whole either, nor do I hate China or Chinese people as a whole. I really like China, actually. I just get annoyed at people who get in my face and try to sell me their junk (or who spam internet forums), and like to vent about it on those same forums.

I don't think we really disagree on anything here, you just don't like how I worded things.

Where did we figure that he was from, anyway?

Sweden or something? If so, it just makes an argument about cultural annoyances in east Asia all the more relevant!
