You know, you're right. I know everyone is saying 'convention' but really I was thinking of this as more of a gathering or meetup as well. Having worked a ton of anime conventions (in the dealer's room) for several years at a previous job, I too know an actual convention is a crapload of work even if it is small. Of course there's the fact that it will be small for the first few times it happens. I had forgotten about the permission to sell aspect as well. Cons with dealer's rooms mean paying taxes as a vendor. Now maybe if there's a little bit of trading going on it could be fudged, but people with tables of stuff and a cashbox is obvious.

If i could afford the air fair.....damnit i wish there were retro gaming events in Adelaide =___=

And I agree that more of a meetup-type-thing would be fine as well -- if it's the most practical thing, a meeteup with some con-like features is a good place to start. It can always grow from there.

While I agree that a convention seems like a bit of a reach at this point, I also think it would be hard to get as many people to come from around the country/world to one location for a one-day meet up kind of thing. I know that it wouldn't be worth airfare to me, and driving more than 4-5 hours for a one day event would be less than enticing.

Regional meet ups would make more sense, so we could do maybe 10-15 or so around the country and (another 5 or so internationally) all in the same month (July 2010?). We could hold them at gaming related places - arcades, retro-themed stores, etc. The planners could work together to schedule events, etc. at each meetup - maybe even a guest speaker in some circumstances. Afterwards, each organizer could report back on success/failure and we could start to get an idea of whether a convention would be feasible...

In any case, I'd be willing to plan one for PA/NJ/NY/MD/DE and surrounding areas.

After hearing everything that everybody has said so far, this seems like a good logical first step. I'm super excited to get together for a Con, but a "regional chapter meeting" could be more feasible.

Why don't we pool our resources and get a booth or some other organized get together at one or more of the already organized cons? I know Cleveland just had their retro gaming convention and will have another one this time next year. Im sure there are other around the US too.

While I don't know how much I can offer in terms of organizing things, I would definitely make an attempt to attend.

also i think certain members' bands should play. that would be great.
