He says this is because it negatively affects the experience of smarpthone users browsing via limited cellular bandwidth. However, it does not negatively effect the experience of laptop and desktop users browsing with unlimited internet. I try to compromise by using spoilers, but the new forum loads images behind spoilers, even if you don't open the spoiler.

That would make one's overall internet experience easier on one's data plan, not just dealing with Exhuminator's goofy posts.
Your goofy posts often have content I want under that spoiler, but I want it in an easier to read package (in addition to, not necessarily instead of, a stack of pretty cover art). In fact, I daresay I really enjoy the meat of most of your goofy posts! But I suppose another, related truth is that I come on the forum to read not to look at pictures, so even browsing on a desktop or laptop I am put off by tall stacks of images, because it means I have to scroll scroll scroll to get back to the content I came to the forum to read. The real exceptions to this are threads devoted to images (easy to avoid if I'm not in the mood) and reviews. A few users on here, elkinfencer10 especially, write longer, more detailed reviews and place images intelligently so that it complements and adds context to the text. It makes the images feel much more meaningful and less like an image dump. (Which is not to say that I think you just dump images and run.) Some other users will dump a single image as their post, with no other text or context, and I think that's a waste of their time and mine.

But even without limited bandwidth or data caps, I will always wage war against animated GIFs, because the images take up so much data for so little return. I also tend to find most uses of them to be highly disruptive of the reading experience, especially because people often choose animations that are far larger and longer (and flashier) than necessary to make their point.

I don't own a smart phone. I use my wife's occasionally, for checking a quick email or looking for directions or something. All my "net surfing" is done on a desktop PC with monitor. I can't imagine trying to view this website via phone. I'm also a bit old-fashioned (no way!). I prefer the added flair images give to posts.

I actually use the desktop site while checking the site on my phone...and I use the AcidTech theme.

A format I was using long before he took influence. Not that I mind. I enjoy images in forum posts. Spice for the potatoes.

In my 21 years using forums Mar is the only one I have ever seen put up such hissy fits over a picture.

You are included in that group, but for some reason elkinfencer10's stand out most to me, in part because he posts so damn many of them. He is a game completing machine.

I like the long-form reviews, but I also got really lazy about it. Easier for me to blurb out a bunch of text. No question the visuals make it more likely to stop and read, though.

Text is king. Give me something to read before anything else.

I like images in forums too, even animated ones. We're talking about a visual medium, having visuals to go with the discussion makes sense.

That said, it does make sense to be aware of filesize/scaling/whatever, and animated gifs (in particular) can end up being obscenely large.

Web usability has a lot to say about wasting users' time and data.
