If thats the case GOOD haha. All I hear is people fawning over metroidvania and open world, which are great concepts, but way over used.

If these are common opinions here I am def in the right place :D

I love Metroidvania games. I prefer them to Classicvania, but not by a ton. It just depends on what I feel like playing. I think quite a few of the classic Castlevania games are overrated (*cough*Rondo*cough*). Still good, though.

Open-world, as presented by many AAA games, is what I (and others) refer to as "checklist gaming". It's honestly not that fun, and if you're slightly OCD, the mission choices overwhelm you at first until you realize most of it isn't fun and mostly meaningless and you just get back on the main track. The last game that did this for me was Horizon: Zero Dawn. Great game, but some of that mess isn't worth it; getting back on the main track restored a good deal of the fun.

You know what are good "open world" games? WRPGs that aren't just dungeon crawlers. You had some massive worlds there to explore at your leisure, or you could choose instead to follow your main quest line...if you even knew what your main quest line was. Having a massive world to just go out and wander is part of what got me into MMOs when they first started making headway around 2000. I'd go in just so I could wander off and see what the landscape looked like. It was impressive.

Now fatigue has set in, and what was once a novel idea has become dull. But every now and again I'll have a game come along that causes something to stir within me and drives me to go find out what's on the other side of a hill. Probably a dragon or a big monster or maybe a new dungeon. Maybe a new weapon or something. I should go check it out.

The best gaming decision I made in 2017 was trading in Horizon Boredom Dawn before I even beat it, because another minute of that game would have put me into a coma.

I traded it in for Yakuza Zero and I'd do it again if I could.

Metroidvania's are the best but the label has been thrown around too much these past few years. There's a lot of lazy attempts at it thesedays that don't do it very well at all.

See, to me, HZD wasn't really that bad about that stuff. The total number of any particular thing to go do was relatively small (outside of the literal collectibles I guess?), so doing most of what there was to do wasn't unreasonable. I finished the game at a decently high completion rate, and didn't really feel like much outstayed its welcome. Compared to the "there are how many of these?!? HAHA. No." reaction I had to Korok seeds and shrines in BoTW, for instance, which vastly outpaced my capacity to care. To be fair, I think those were are as numerous as they are simply to ensure players find a decent number of them, but still.

I'd say making things a checklist is more where it's a problem, I think. Or making "taking over" a map based on that completion percent more the tiring thing. Sidequests and activities that are simply there if you feel like it are kinda different.

I adore open worlds because I love to explore everything in games. I don't like the GTA and Ubisoft open worlds, however. They get so boring really quickly. Shenmue or Xenoblade or Botw I can spend forever in. Esp Xenoblade and Botw that entice you to explore and discover on your own. No checklists. They are not just backdrops. They are interactive worlds. I also like something like Yakuza where it's smaller and contained but packed with things to do. Rent a Hero 1 on Dreamcast has a far more engaging world than GTA III.

I don't see Rondo being overrated, overpriced maybe. I've mostly seen opinions that place it near the top of the list fr Classicvania and I'd say that is warranted. The remainder of opinions I've seen (especially lately) are those of disappointment after someone tracks it down or plays it on the Wii and finds that it's just another (still good) Casstlevania game. I think most of the hype comes from the Japanese-exclusivity and from people who have yet to play it.

A few years ago I got Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for Wii U free as some promo thing. I'm going, to be honest. I don't care much for the game at all. Has great music but that's about all I like. I like Gray Ginther's work on Darksiders but I feel his work in DK TF is bland. I don't think the game visually on a technical level or artistic is very good looking at all. I'm sorry but I don't like the game.

I can't wait to get it again on the Switch. Love the Returns games.

I couldn't stand it. Donkey Kong controls like a bag of turds.
