The manga was cute, silly, funny, and fan-service-y. The anime is just kinda slow and uninteresting... I only have disc 1 (episodes 1-4), I watched the first two last night, I'll finish the DVD tonight.AppleQueso wrote:I didn't like Love Hina at all.
In other news, I gave up on watching Magic Knight Rayearth season 2. I made it through 8 of 29 episodes and just found it excruciatingly boring. There's way too much unnecessary dialogue and the post-apocalyptic setting is just terribly dull to look at (black skies with grey/brown foreground... this is what every episode looked like). Maybe I'll get back to it someday, but it's shelved for now. Such a shame because I loved the manga, season 1, and the video game adaptations.

^I don't know when the last time you watched season 1 was, but I thought it was even slower paced than the second one.
The Magic Knight Rayearth anime has things I like but it's also in need of some heavy trimming. I think that if the whole thing was just a 26-episode series, it could have been really great.

I just watched Fukatoi Alternative. It was pretty good. It's full of absurdism - giant squid monsters, biplanes, and the like - but it's mostly a love story. Kind of disturbing love story involving two female twins and one dude. No one ever seems to be opposed to the idea.
That's actually why I started watching it - to see what they thought of a polyamorous romance - but they never went anywhere with it. It was still worth it for the squid monsters.

Yeah, FA was pretty weird with the mixture of serious romance and giant enemy squids.

Does anyone here have any anime series on Blu-ray? I've been looking at a few of them on Amazon (well, actually a lot of them on Amazon) and I was just sort of curious of what you guys thought of the transfers. I mean, when you put the disks in do they feel like Blu-rays or do you feel they were more of an upscaled DVD job? It doesn't really matter what kind of show it is. My collection's got everything from Berserk to Maria Watches Over US. I'm just curious of what your opinions are on certain releases.

I haven't watched any on Blu-Ray, but the Netflix versions look great in HD. I do have some BDrips of Japan-only anime and they are fantastic. All that stuff is new, though. I'm not sure how older shows would look.

Thanks. Yeah. That's part of the reason I asked. I would imagine that most everything from the last....5 or so years would look pretty good on Blu-ray, but some of those earlier series....Valkyrie-Favor wrote:I haven't watched any on Blu-Ray, but the Netflix versions look great in HD. Guess I just want to know if there is anything I should avoid.

Actually I find that when it comes to blu ray, older stuff with nice transfers tends to look even better (or at least more striking) than newer stuff. Of course that kinda applies mainly to live action...Michi wrote:Thanks. Yeah. That's part of the reason I asked. Any good blu ray release of an older anime is either going to be an upscale (using algorithms that look better than whatever your player/tv does on the fly) or have to be a new transfer from the original film prints. So you're probably looking at movies moreso than series.

Well, Captain Herlock will look pretty good.
I watched Murder Princess on Netflix a few days ago. Hey, six episodes! It was completely average and uninteresting and low-budget but the character designs and music were nice.
