I prefer Grandia's orchestra opening theme that plays with the intro cinematic. But I do also think Grandia's fanfare is better than Final Fantasy's, even if it is less iconic.

Now that's one I've never experienced. How is the original Grandia? I've just played through much or finished(forget) the 2nd one on Dreamcast back when it was new. I have the HD remaster of it for PC now, so kind of wondering if it would be too much of a step back to pick that up for PS1.

Also forgot how beautiful that Ys I music is. I miss my old TG CD games so much at times.

The first Grandia is really good. I vastly prefer the second, but the first is still really good... Once you get out of that tedious opening.

Second is easily my favorite and usually, that's the minority. Because of Grandia 2, I used to adopt the screen name of Ryudo for about a decade. Some places I can't change its some remnants still remain. Have the Grandia II poster framed on the wall. It's pretty funny how everyone in that game is just Metal Gear Solid voice actors. Millenia might be the only non-MGS VA but she has bigger fame. Ariel from Little Mermaid.

I tried to get into the original Grandia earlier this year. I couldn't make it through the beginning. The beginning of the game is TERRIBLE. Let's force the player to wander around town doing boring fetch quests for an hour. GREAT IDEA

That's not to say I won't give Grandia another chance someday though.

Yup the beginning sucks. Shame as it's a wonderful game with some of the worst VA ever in a funny 90s RPG way. IMO II is much better in every way. Not a slow start at all, puts you right in the action.

The beginning does suck, but it's worth playing through.

I love the second game tho. And yeah the TMNT x Little Mermaid voice work is great.

I thought the whole game was mostly tedious but it has it's charms and i kinda look it back fondly eventhough i remember having awful time with it. Mostly because the battles feel slow and dungeons are annoying mazes.

Been a long time since I played through it, but I really liked the original Grandia (and the second, actually). There are some big tonal differences between the two, though; the first game leans harder towards Lunar in a lot of ways. The only iffy things are grinding spell levels and some bad voice acting. But even that isn't too terrible. It's got all sorts of charm, though. I kinda wish someone would translate the Saturn version, or hack in the PSX translation. It's supposed to be the best version. It was the original platform, and compromises were made in porting to PSX. It's still a great game, regardless!

Oh, and yeah, the areas can be pretty tough to navigate. Hope you've got a good sense of direction!

It's been a long time since I played but I remember one dungeon pissing me off. Everything looked the same and was made to confuse the player. I always got lost. Typhoon tower? Hated that dungeon. Grandia 1 has a lot of charm in the characters and great OST. It is a bit of a dungeon crawler which can get tedious at times but I feel like Skies of Arcadia which had its flaws. Everything else overshadows them.
