Dunno why you guys hate FFXV so much when all the FFXIII games exist...pure trash all 3 of them. It's a good game but it's main issue is the story which potentially could be one of the better FF stories..just they left it more to movies and anime.
Yeah story is a big part of RPGs but as mentioned it has the elements to be a very good one. The big bad of the game again potential to be legit one of the top FF villains. Music is up there with any FF game. I initially disliked everything about the game but when you realize what thegame actually is and what is and isn't there. It's a good game that could have been great.
What are you playing?
Re: What are you playing?
FF13 was at least complete, this is even dismissing the two sequels. After the endless tutorial, the combat system is actually quite good and fun. Definitely some dynamic and interesting concepts. The game looked current gen on last gen. The music is mindblowing.
FF15 was like half a complete game, even when I watched Kingslaive and the anime OVA, numerous plot holes were cracking through left and right. Gameplay has just about zero depth. Hit x to auto attack and dance around. No Gambits/party control whatsoever. Can only play as one character. Magic system sucked. Random summons every few hours I guess? "RPG elements" boil down to being able to equip 2-3 accessories and a really lame generic skill system. Side quest rewards from lazy MMO quality NPC's give you gil or ingredients. All dungeons are caves. Yoko Shimomura's weakest work, when the music is even there... I've already forgotten about it all. Chapter 8+ is the most insane trainwreck I've ever seen. Ardyn makes Seymour look good. And yes, I've watched some theory/analysis videos on him and the main story, it just makes me care about the entire thing even less.
FF13 is flawed, convoluted, and weird from the start. But it least it never had an identity crisis. I hated everyone but Fang. But FF15 starts off slightly more promising with four bros that were fairly likeable, but then the game just completely fell on its face for me and started to feel paper thin. I played pre-patch Chapter 13 and it was horrendous. I did tons of post end game stuff in FF13, but had to force myself to try that for a session or two with FF15 until I gave up because it was so boring.
Long story short this is like a 4/10 (FF15) vs a 6/10 (FF13) for me so I really don't care. FF4-10 are all 10x better. I'm excited to wash away FF15 with FF12 Zodiac Age.

Re: What are you playing?
It's X on XBO I guess but on PS4 it's O...oof XBO version is kinda muddy looking. Also while yeah FFXV has a incomplete story it's incomplete of something good. XIII story even complete is worse than any FF game ever and that's saying something after X..and X-2. Sidequests in FFXV at least have some purpose. LR they were literally meaningless. There is not a single shred of anything redeemable about the XIII games...well ok they make fun cringe videos.
The music is quite good in FFXV esp the dungeon theme and customizing Regalia...oh and Regalia Type F is pretty fun. Random Summons? Every few hours? That's not how it works AT ALL. There is no time limit to them. It's not random. It's very specific battle conditions and once per battle. You can summon 2 in a period of 5-10 minutes pretty easy. I summoned Rah and Titan once about 10 min apart because of the conditions.
It's not RPG elements. It literally has all the elemental stuff and every enemy has different stat based strengths and weaknesses and weak to some things and not others like any game. The accessory just acts like any RPG equipment and the stats to manage. You just balance out what stats you like best. Raises offense lowers a certain elemental resistance or whatever. Quite a few side quests give you weapons. I got the legendary weapons that way. There is an entire quest line for old man cid to boost your weapon stats. The characters do progress. Lightning is still a blank canvas of grump after 3 games. Ad is great as a villain. No theories needed. His story is all out there but yes wasn't explained too clearly in game..give ya that. The car becomes an airship later as well but the F is so much better even if it can't fly and still needs gas.
FFXIII VERY much had an identity crisis. It didn't know it's not Crash Bandicoot with it's hallway game design.
The narrative is so convoluted and nonsense it again doesn't know what it is and by the 3rd game we have a really terrible RPG version of Majoras Mask.
I will be clear about one thing. I don't love FFXV and not some defender of it. It's has problems. I been this games biggest critic since the demo 2 years ago. I had many issues while playing it at first but again realized what is actually there. It's just flat wrong to say it's a bad game. It's not. I don't care if someone hates it. XIII games just are bad period but no problem if someone enjoys them. I like Devil's Third so whatever.
Edit one last thing. If you really dislike the music it's best to buy all the music albums from FF and Nier from the shops and get the MP3 player. You can listen to all that while exploring on foot/chocobo and in the car.

Re: What are you playing?
What precise determining factors are you using to decide what is and isn't a good game? I was under the impression that the objective standard was a lot more loose than you seem to think it is. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing = bad game and Tetris = good game, but between these extreme goal posts it's largely opinion.Segata wrote: It's just flat wrong to say it's a bad game. It's not. Games are art. Unless it literally does not work - Arkham Knight on PC, Chasing Dead on Wii U - I have a hard time saying a game is "objectively" bad.

And I'm not even that fond of Tetris.marurun wrote:What precise determining factors are you using to decide what is and isn't a good game? I meant at launch but forgot to specify that. You're right, though.MrPopo wrote:Arkham Knight works on PC these days.ElkinFencer10 wrote:Games are art. Unless it literally does not work - Arkham Knight on PC, Chasing Dead on Wii U - I have a hard time saying a game is "objectively" bad.

I've been playing the hell out Battlefield 4. I do intend to get sucked into the world of Zelda: BOTW here soon.

Re: What are you playing?
For the record, I don't hate FFXV. There are just elements of it I don't enjoy. Sticking to the story stuff made things more enjoyable. Villain is indeed excellent. Combat is fun, warping around is super-cool. The MMORPG-styled side quests aren't very fun, and the world is very, very empty, which is a complaint I tended to have about FFXII as well.
I... actually enjoyed FFXIII. Best corridor RPG-RTS I ever played. Okay, the only one.
