Dragon Quest IX
I started it last year and never *officially* stopped, but haven't been playing games at all for the past several months. Anyway, I spent most of today working on alchemy recipes and grinding and I'd say I'm officially I'm HOOKED ONCE AGAIN. Like all the DQ games, this one's great. I wish I could have played it online.
If I can keep my gaming super-casual, I might be able to rekindle my routine of playing more things again. I've been lurking on the forums for the past week or so but feel like I may as well be posting again too?
What are you playing?
Re: What are you playing?
Still plugging away at Drakengard 3. I've gotten two endings so far and the format of this game seems a bit different than other Yoko Taro games. Branch B was only 5 levels, compared to 20 something up to that point. And it was all new stuff, though some recycled environments. It looks like Branch C and D are like this as well. The story is getting more interesting and crazier. And this game is just weirdly fulfilling in a fun beat em' up kind of way...
So I wasn't planning on it, but because this means I don't have to replay the entire campaign multiple times, I might keep plugging away and go for the final true ending with this one. As it continues to be interesting mechanically and storyline wise.
But yeah... it still requires a lot of patience and virtue. I was cracking up today noticing that this even seems like it's the same engine Deadly Premonition was on. I kid you not. The combat is sometimes more difficult than it needs to be just because of how clunky things are with the lockon and dodging, etc. So it can be frustrating. There's also no difficulty options, but I think if you die and "continue" the levels get easier each time. I've definitely died multiple times so far, so it's not a cake walk.
It's just so funny how low budget and unpolished this thing is, yet the cutscenes are pretty top notch. So Access Games has some skilled people there. It's downright hilarious that this was released in 2014, compared to Nier from 2010... when you'd think otherwise because Cavia were a more talented studio. AND even then Cavia were pretty B-tier, so that should give you perspective on Drakengard 3 haha...
I really hope Automata's success lets Yoko Taro work with an actual budget from here on. Better yet it would be fantastic if he just gets to team up with Platinum for the future. It's a big step up from Nier on a technical level and a staggering next dimension from Drakengard 3...

Journey.
Only complaint is I wish I could disable the motion camera. I know I can use the analog but the way I sit and always hold my controller makes the camera look up by default. Holding it straight isn't comfy. So I'm just constantly adjusting it with the analog. It's not a huge issue but does detact.

Flower.
This would be far more enjyable if it used an analog stick. has thatgamecompany even heard of analog sticks as they seem to avoid them. Still kinda been enjoying the game.

I dug the gyroscopic controls. It feels intuitive and natural to the overall experience. I feel like it would not be nearly as enjoyable a game without them.Segata wrote:Flower.

Re: What are you playing?
I started Metal Arms: Glitch In The System on the Microsoft XBOX this afternoon!
Wow, there is some quality voice over talent here and the writing is quite funny. The opening cut scene is worth checking out as I had a good chuckle on it.
The gameplay and concept are very interesting. It is a third person shooter, but you are basically fighting cute and cuddly robots. It's like if Wall-E had guns. It's a legitimate shooter and plays like one as well, it's just weird to be killing little robots. I wish my gun had more Oomph to it as the robots take a ton of hits to die.
But, overall, it's really good. It's kind of under the radar and released on all 3 consoles at the time, so it's fun to play a bit of a hidden gem.

Popped FFXV back in my PS4.
I finished the game back in December. I put it back in the other day to do some post game side quests. mainly Monster Hunting. I took on Adamantoise and took it down first try. It's a long one tho. 2.5 hours nonstop. The Castle dungeon was the most annoying with the dumb maze and spaz camera in tight places. I forgot how bad the camera can be. I upgraded the Regalia to Type D since the flying version sucks. Now I have a monster truck. It's pretty cool honestly. I'm having more fun with it post game than in game. Was like that with DQ heroes as well.

Re: What are you playing?
Been playing SO much Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth +. It's just so much fun to take my Switch out of the dock to go sit at my PC and play it while I listen to podcasts (I don't have Afterbirth on Steam, you see). I don't get the problems I've heard about it though. Why one earth would anyone ever play this as an actual twin stick (with both joysticks)? You can't even fire diagonally. What's wrong with just using the 4 face-buttons? O.o
