I think it's bad and honestly have never really liked it a lot, despite having grown up playing it a lot (seems like anyone that had a Genesis had it or knew about it). The small cramped level spaces for the comic pages are weird and the 1 life thing is wack, but I guess of course back then they wanted you to keep replaying this game forever to master and 1CC it.
I played a little of Comix Zone back in the day and I'm kind of afraid of going back to it. I remember the combat taking absolutely forever and the game being incredibly difficult. I don't know if I ever beat the first level alone. I'd be curious to try it once again, but I do not have high hopes for it.

Out of curiosity, what is the VGM Jukebox you were listening to again? Is that your own personal music or from a website? I listen to http://www.rpgamers.net/ every now and then as they have a great selection, good system to keep it random and I love to be able to request songs.

I beat Comix Zone years ago. I remember the first third of it was very impressive. But it wasn't long before creativity gave way to asset reuse, shoddier and shoddier level design, absurd difficulty spikes, and incredibly redundant combat scenarios. If only the entire game had kept up the creative fervor of its initial third, Comix Zone would have been a legit classic IMO. Sadly, it seemed like the developers ran out of time and/or budget, and rushed the back 2/3rds of the experience.

Your last part is funny, because the VGM Jukebox runs on user submissions and testimonials!

I like it, but it's way too hard for its own good.

I'm at a point where every game that aims for realism I can't tell apart anymore. They all just look so much alike it may as well be the same game to me. Why I value art style so much. Not saying something has to look cartoony but something that makes it stand out.

I wouldn't call that unpopular for sure.

I'm not even going to bother masking this URL, but this upcoming game (bet EA will cancel it), says enough... could anything possibly look more boring than this?

Comic Zone is a really good, really well-designed game with a two fatal flaws. The first is that you take damage with every attack you make. Punch an enemy? Take a sliver of damage. Need to punch a box or barrel? Take a sliver of damage. Enemy blocks your attack? Take another sliver of damage. To excel at this game you have to stick to the most high-damage attacks and make every attack count. That makes the game much harder (and combat much blander) than the combat, puzzles, and platforming would otherwise suggest. The second flaw is that health restoration items show up at a rate that would be considered normal if you didn’t take damage every time you attacked. Removing chip damage to the player on every attack would dramatically reshape the game into an instant classic.

I've always wondered about rom-hacking as a way to alleviate problems like this. If there are total overhauls of games out there, it seems like it'd be easy to remove small flaws like this. I've thought about this for other games too, but of course I can't think about any examples at the moment. Any game with one continue would be an easy choice.

It doesn't have to make a game easier, but I'm sure there are tons of games that are just one or two tweaks away from being amazing.
