At least. I'm still not convinced that we hit the graphical plateau for what the PS3/360 could do. Games like Ni No Kuni, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider looked absolutely fantastic and I'm sure there was a little more wiggle room as far as graphics go.Aramonde wrote:I think it will last as long as this last one did 7 years.Xeogred wrote:My guess is this gen will be shorter again at ~5 years or something. It is much more than just graphics that utilize the processing power. And some of the late stage games were pushing the hardware limits. How quick and smooth the PS4 goes between menus and multitasking is impressive.Retrogamer0001 wrote:At least. I'm still not convinced that we hit the graphical plateau for what the PS3/360 could do. TLoU looked nice in stills. So did Bioshock Infinite. But what if they were running at constant 60fps?
Fortunately Bioshock Infinite is available on PC, and I was able to get it for $10 a few days ago. It feels nice playing it without constant screen tearing and slowdown. On the PS3 Bioshock Infinite made me feel nauseous at times. Not so on the PC version. Maybe a combination of the pov and choppiness. Not sure.
Next gen ports of these games would be great. Although I'm not sure how likely that is.

Depends on what's in it. Personally, I happily pay that for personal builds because I use the hell out of my PCRetrogamer0001 wrote: And what would you pay for an i7 setup with a top quality monitor? I'm not tech savvy in the least and have no knowledge of building my own computer. I don't consider myself to have gotten ripped off, but I also rarely play the thing, so I'm assuming that a PC four years old will likely have some trouble playing the newest games on max settings. Obsolete probably wasn't the right term to use, but I also wouldn't consider a four year old PC to be modern either.
I'd say more that an i7/etc is far from needed for SCII. Plenty of people spend $700-800 on effective builds. The monitor is also not typically counted in the budget, much like whatever TV you're using for it isn't part of that $399 for a PS4.
One consideration with PCs is that the target resolution and so on tends to go up. Consoles have had that up to 1080p upscale with 540-720p native (mostly) content. PC gaming tends to shoot for native resolution on whatever's typical/popular. These days, 1080p is the lower end of benchmarks, and seeing 1440p as the target is common. In a year or three it'll likely be 4k.
So while that 4 year old machine might have little chance of running a new game at native res on a 30" 1440p panel...it might still do fairly well on the 20" 900p display it was bought with.
In general though, I'd still just say it's not directly comparable, outside of the fact that some of the same games are available on both.

Yeah I'm going to add that my rig at about $1,700-2K overall is being used way more than my consoles.. I afk on those things all the time.. I would say in my case, my desktop is more of a bargain than any console is, especially portables.. I don't game too often on my PC, but I do other things such as streaming, programming, schoolwork and browsing.. Hell I use this thing more than my TV now..

I didn't mean to spark so much talk on PC rigs and such, haha.
I guess what I was thinking was more along the lines of... we just need to see some more innovation again this gen and I'm waiting for the next big thing that completely changes everything. IE, last gen (360/PS3) for the most part solidified physics with Havok and real lighting/aliasing effects and such (seems to be the one thing that makes it hard to go back to early 2000's games sometimes, that lack real lighting).
I think we've talked about it before but it'd be great if we can see some advancement in enemy AI. Nothing has ever really surpassed what FEAR, Halo, Half-Life 2, etc, did, when I'm sure there's got to be room for improvement there... without making it bot hacking like Perfect Dark or whatever haha. It would be amazing if I could genuinely feel like I'm being tactically hunted down by some crazy enemies or something.
I'm just ready for a lot of change. I'm ready for cover mechanics and QTE's to die very painfully, and for some new trends to take off. So then I can hate those down the road!
As for my guess with this gen being quicker, I dunno, not like I'm any expert at all haha. But I guess I'm just wondering if things might try to run faster like how fast phones, tablets, and other things roll out, with how quick technology is being pushed out nowadays. I guess that's just kind of the vibe I got watching my roommate show off the PS4... it was just kind of like "Oh, it's the new iphone".

I don't think we ever need to see another QTE in a video game...they're kinda like all those matrix-esque cliches where time slows down and you see all the bullets fly by while some guy dodges them. That crap was everywhere in the early and mid 2000s, and I feel the same about QTEs now.Xeogred wrote:I didn't mean to spark so much talk on PC rigs and such, haha.

I'd like to see a new gen every 5 years or under. That would keep console gaming fresh and up to date.
