In 2010, I went out and bought a moderately-advanced PC so I could play Starcraft 2. The cost? Almost $1400. Earlier that year, I bought a new 250g Xbox 360. $350. Quite the difference. One of the reasons console gaming will likely never die is because of its relative affordability compared to a PC (not to mention popularity and ease of use). $399 for the newest Playstation really isn't that expensive, not compared to paying over a thousand for a PC that will be obsolete in two years.
Cost isn't always directly relatable though. Quite a lot of people buy PCs for other reasons, which would offset a good chunk of the price of a new rig. "Obsolete" is somewhat harsh as a good build from a couple years ago is likely still going strong.
One can build quite a library on PC via Steam sales, Humble Bundle, and so on for cheap as well. Console makers can also get away with fat margins on proprietary accessories - which is not to say PC gaming doesn't have overpriced input devices/etc, but there's usually more choice.
A PC is definitely NOT obsolete in two years. I have a first gen i7-920 CPU and 2 GTX560-Ti's and I can run anything on the market maxed out. If you buy cheap parts that are mediocre it will definitely become behind the times faster than a top of the line system, but 2 years is still a bit of an exaggeration.
By the way, that CPU of mine is from 2009 and still gets the same framerates that new i7's get, with only a 15% overclock.

Played the demo and it's not good IMO. Your character has no presence in the world and it's confusing what is destructible and what's not. Oh, these crates you can't destroy, but these you can... Only one button for attacks, just not fun. If it dropped to sub-$10 or was on PSN+ I'd give it a go, but otherwise no.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I still play modern games on my i3 with no trouble. You only need the latest processors and dual $500 video cards if you're trying to do some sort of 4K multi-monitor setup with all the graphics settings on ultra.

You got ripped off. Badly.
And what would you pay for an i7 setup with a top quality monitor? I'm not tech savvy in the least and have no knowledge of building my own computer. I don't consider myself to have gotten ripped off, but I also rarely play the thing, so I'm assuming that a PC four years old will likely have some trouble playing the newest games on max settings. Obsolete probably wasn't the right term to use, but I also wouldn't consider a four year old PC to be modern either.
Is a 4 year old console modern? Will a PS4 be modern in 4 years when cheap laptops and x86 tablets out perform it for games? When I had an ultrabook it outperformed my PS3 on Skyrim. Wasn't even close.
I do hope that most XB1 and PS4 games will shoot for 60fps though. I find that more appealing than higher res textures.

Comparing a console and a PC in terms of modernity isn't really the same thing at all - most PCs are extremely easy to customize/upgrade and new components are constantly being developed. As far as consoles go, yes, the PS4 will be considered modern for the next seven or eight years. Can the same be said for most PCs without upgrading? Highly doubtful.
