It's always worth playing Chrono Trigger to get to the Dark Ages alone for me. That kind of sci-fi blows my face off.

God, I haven't played Xenogears in years.

Anyway, I'm nearing the end of the first playthrough in Chrono Trigger. Currently I'm working on wrapping up sidequests while gaining all the techs. All of my characters are between levels 44-40. Characters with techs maxed out: Chrono, Ayla, Frog, Marle, Robo. Characters remaining: Lucca (since I killed Magus, he's not included). So..yeah. I hate using Lucca. I have her ultimate weapon, and I still hate using her, because now I've got a slow, weak character with a crapshoot gun that may do awesome, or may do 1/10 of its base damage. The more techs she gets, the better she looks, but she's still just not worth it when compared to the others. Even Marle, the only character I have who is slower and weaker, is more valuable to me due to her large number of heals, Haste, and Life 2. Lucca's high magic makes her useful for beating that War God guy at the End of Time, but that's really all I want to use her for.

As for sidequests, I've already got a few under my belt from the last time I posted. Gaspar's suggestions of where to look are great! So far I've finished the Sunken Desert (as much as I dislike Lucca, I took three attempts to stop that memory. That's just awful), Ozzie's Dungeon, the Geno Dome, and have earned the Sun Stone. I've gotten some guy his tools back, and I've found where the Rainbow Shell is, though that's as far as I've gotten there.

How's it compare to Secret of Mana for you? :P

Actually I was thinking about that the other day. I feel like Chrono Trigger has better story exposition, but that probably comes from the larger cast, some of whom have excellent or tragic backgrounds. It feels like there is more at stake with this game, even though technically both are fights to save a world from an apocalypse. It's just that in CT, there's more of a build up to it, with you witnessing the apocalypse multiple times as well as its after effects. So between the two, CT compels me more.

As for combat, I often find myself wishing I had more manueverability and control in CT. Secret of Mana was great in that it let me move to avoid getting hit, and CT's world seemed designed to allow that at first. But I enjoy the combinations of characters I can employ in CT to great effect, as opposed to the system in place for SoM, which is more dependent on weapons loadout and magic levels. Bosses are also generally harder in CT, since I can't simply stun lock them with spells like in SoM.

As for art direction, I feel they're on par for their releases. Muisc wise...well, I'm leaning towards CT on this one, but then again I am playing it right now, and it's overworld theme is haunting.

Anyway, onto my progress:

I'm in the Black Omen. All sidequests are finished. My characters are all level 50-45. And Chrono is a beast! His speed, power, and magic defense are all ** rated. He's nearing max HP and MP. Equipment wise, he's carrying the Rainbow, Prism Helm, Moon Armor, and Prism Specs. His attack rating is 254. So he consistently hits for 1500+ damage. I'm using Chrono, Ayla, and Frog in the Black Omen, though I may pull out Lucca to have her work on her techs for a bit. She only has flare left to learn, and then all available characters will have all techs.

So yeah, I think I can do this. I look forward to trying, at the very least.

Are sorcerers really powerful? I've heard people say the player avatar is great in that class
Nosferatu (and the upgraded version) is the best weapon in the game due to the self healing, so your Sorcerer becomes effectively invincible. That's what makes Sorcs so well regarded.

In terms of worries about making a mistake, unless you are trying to do a no-grind playthrough you can't really make an irreversible mistake. Since the game has infinite exp if you end up picking a class you don't like you can just grind that character until they're high enough to class change to something better.
So I finished chapter 10 and paralogue 4. I feel like I need to start thinking about S supporting someone with my avatar. Can't decide. Based on who is available to me so far, I'm kind of trying to decide between Tharja, Cordelia, and Olivia. I found Tharja's obsession with the avatar amusing, and it certainly makes her stand out from the other females. She's the only character who seems to just want you right out of the gates. You don't even really have to do much to get her attention. She pretty damn weird and creepy though. Olivia appeals to me as I just like the fact that she's a dancer and singer. I like artistic people. Also, the shyness I think is cute. Don't know much else about her though as she's new to my group. Then there's Cordelia, who seems to be essentially the perfect woman. She's unusually smart, talented, beautiful, and highly regarded by everyone. It's like this woman can do no wrong. She seems too hung up on Chrom though, which I've heard is a consistent character trait even if your avatar romances her. Who really wants to marry a girl who secretly wants to bang your best friend

So I don't know. I don't really care about who the best choice is from a gameplay perspective, or how it will affect child units' stats and abilities. I'm just trying to make a role playing choice and can't make up my mind. Who did you guys pick? Are their many more girls for me to choose from in the chapters to come? Oh and I heard that I need to marry off Chrom before chapter 11 ends for some reason. So I guess I need to pick someone for him too

So the way Chrom works is at the end of Chapter 11 whoever he has the highest support with of his eligible supports will be his marriage partner, even if they aren't S rank. This includes Olivia; to get her to win you essentially have to not do anyone's C rank conversation with Chrom and have the two of them pair up the entire chapter.

Tharja has an obsession with the avatar regardless of your gender.

I ended up marrying my avatar to Chrom. If your avatar marries one of the monster classes then the child also has access to that class, so that can be a consideration.

Alternatively you can have Sully, Maribelle and Sumia marry someone else before chapter 11, leaving Olivia as the only choice.

Hmmm, I'm kind of leaning towards Olivia and Cordelia as my favorite marriage choices. Maybe I can use a DLC map to play through a few times and build up Chrom and Olivia to S rank. Then I'll work on doing the same with my avatar and Cordelia, who are currently at B rank.
