Tell me about it. I feel like I should be closing in on the end of FFIX, but I still have another disc to go after this one :?

Last discs are always the shortest, usually lol.

Started on Sin and Punishment: Star Successor tonight.

This game has a LOT going for it right out the gate: Excellent art style, innovative gameplay, and a story line that already has me hooked. I've only just cleared the second level but I am looking forward to the rest.

The Wii can really put out some strong visuals with the right developers.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yes, I have! I really like that game, simple as it is.

As a matter of fact:

This here is a reproduction of the game, using the fan translation, that our very own Ziggy made for me last year.

I gave him some series artwork and he used it to make that ridiculously awesome cover and label you see there. :D

I originally played it a few years back, and when I saw Ziggy's repros after joining up here I had to get to him to make it. I've beaten it a couple more times since then.

Its simplistic to a fault, but its still a fun game, and the fan translation is really strong with a lot funny moments.

If you haven't played it sevin, you should give it a shot. Its a fairly short game, so it wouldn't take you long at all to get through it.

I never played FF8 for more than a few minutes either, but reading Crabmaster's account of his playthrough on that has made me feel that was the right choice.

Its not something I would recommend, but like someone else mentioned it seems to be hit or miss with people. I used to own it shortly after it was released and didnt like it back then either, but one of my friends who didnt even like most RPGs would come over and play it for hours. Plus on my blog at rfgen it also seems to be split pretty close to 50/50 with people who love it and people who agree with me. Normally when I dont like a game I can still see why it appeals to others, but sometimes (like with FFVIII and MGS) I just dont see what the appeal is. Its beyond me.

dsheinem wrote:dammit now I have interest in Vay.

What other RPGs would you compare it to in terms of story and/or gameplay?

In terms of gameplay its very stereotypical of 16 bit RPGs. Attack, Magic, Defend, Run, AI, Items. Its just very fast paced so the battles zip by and never feel like a chore. If you dont have a manual the magic and items could be a bit frustrating since they dont tell you what they do in-game and not all of them are obvious while experimenting (like Thyxaal which was super awesome, but I didnt really use it until the last dungeon). The Magic doesnt even tell you how much MP it uses so you again have to experiment and then remember that number for later so you dont drain your MP by mistake.

Storywise again its not to unusual (other than a couple twists). Ancient and technologically advanced armor lands on your planet 1000 before your characters time and starts destroying everything. 5 mages piece its power into 5 orbs and hid them away. Fast forward to the present and during your wedding advanced machinery attacks your kingdom and takes your bride. Because you cant fight against the machinery being used soi ou have no choice, but to seek the ancient Vay armor in order to save your beloved. The real pleasure was speaking to every NPC in every new area. Some of them were so freaking funny. And then after you finish some important event they mostly repsond differently so I got to talk to every body again and get some new chuckles.

I think Vay came out after Lunar, but it almost feels like a precursor to it. Its very straightforward with not alot of optional questing, and also seemed fairly short (no in game timer so I dont actually know how long I spent playing, I'd guess around 25 hours). I wouldnt recommend playing it so close to finishing Chrono Trigger since it cant compare, but later on if your looking for a simple RPG fix its definitely a solid game even with some of its flaws.

Even after hearing them pronouce it "eye" in game I couldnt help myself from thinking "hey" afterwards.

Last discs are always the shortest, usually lol.

Usually because they are packed with the most FMVs. :P

Glad your enjoying it too. I played through it recently for my list and thought it was a blast. Probably my favorite game from the list.

I didnt think the story was very good though. Found it kind of ridiculous. But who plays Treasure games for their story anyway?

Got further in FFVIII tonight. Just getting ready to attack a giant obelisk called the Lunatic Pandora. The game also took a surprisingly silly sci-fi turn recently.

Cool! :D Let me know what you think if you do!

Just so you know, I wanted a US style style cart and unique label, so that's what Ziggy made, but its also possible to get a copy of the original SFC cart and just add the translation, which can be reverted if you ever chose to.

I don't know what your preference would be, but the option is available.
