I grew up on the NES games, but still have a soft spot for the All Stars graphics that the originals had. May have to double dip on some of these on the VC.
Wii-U thoughts so far
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Looks like Super Mario Advance 3 (SMB3) is hitting the VC shop and might have all of World-E or something? e-card levels, that look like a mishmash of the other Mario games. Looks very cool from skimming around some videos, may have to check this release out.

If they release SMB3 with the E-Reader levels, I'll definitely buy.

You know that fans added them to Mario Maker right?Ziggy587 wrote:If they release SMB3 with the E-Reader levels, I'll definitely buy.

Oh yeah? Well, I'd rather play the real (albeit emulated) thing.fastbilly1 wrote:You know that fans added them to Mario Maker right?Ziggy587 wrote:If they release SMB3 with the E-Reader levels, I'll definitely buy.

Especially since Mario Maker uses the NSMBU physics rather than the physics from the original games.Ziggy587 wrote:Oh yeah? Well the New SMBU WiiU physics weren't bad, it was far more close to Super Mario World than the wonky wretchedness of the previous entries. Still though, I'd go with the eShop game too to get it right.

Oh, I love the NSMBU physics. It's just that for SMB or SMB3, I'd rather have those physics since that's what I've come to expect and feel comfortable with while playing those games. I love J-Pop, but that's not what I would want the BGM for Gears of War to be (as hilarious as that would be).Tanooki wrote:Well the New SMBU WiiU physics weren't bad, it was far more close to Super Mario World than the wonky wretchedness of the previous entries. Also, Mario Maker is missing a lot of assets from the games of the 4 art styles it has.

You can't replicate the e-reader levels in Super Mario Maker. They're full of neat things that don't exist in the game. Like slopes, those blocks that let you run up walls, picking up plants, items that are trapped in bubbles. The e-reader levels have new abilities for the tanooki suit, where turning stone reveals block patterns. A lot of stuff like that.
I'm not sure I buy the "physics is all the same" thing. Playing in SMB1 style definitely feels like there's a decent amount of momentum build up, that doesn't feel present in the other styles. Maybe it's an animation trick (Maybe it's mistranslated, or maybe they said it four months before the game actually came out and it was subsequently altered), but they feel very similar to their originals. The only one that feels off is SMB3, because some of the limitations aren't there (wagging that tail is A LOT easier than in the original) and the P-buffer has different timing. I'd believe jump height and maximum speed are all standardized, though. But considering the game allows style specific items and enemies and you cannot change styles during a course, it would make sense if each was tuned a little towards their original game.

According to Polygon at least, the Wii U VC release does include the e-reader levels:
