I have the 500 GB version of this, and I hooked it up to my Wii U with this. This set up works wonderfully, loads games quickly, is completely silent, is incredibly small, and does not require another outlet.

I hope that helps!

I have a similar set up too. It can comfortably sit on top of or behidn your wii u whilst using minimal space and no power adaptor.

The SD card port is just to maintain Wii functionality - so you can load Wii VC games from SD card like you could last gen.

I followed the advice in this article when picking a HD for my Wii U. I intend to download some WiiWare games at some point, and I have plenty of SD cards sitting around for when that time comes. (I hate paying full price for anything, however, and apparently WiiWare games never go on sale. I will just have to bite the bullet at some point if I want to play Konami's "rebirth" games...)

I'm gonna download some more of those games next paycheck probably. I'd also suggest NyxQuest if you haven't played it.

I've got a 32 GB SD card in my Wii U for WiiWare and a 2 TB Seagate external for my Wii U downloads (I live by the mantra of "Go big or go home," as is made evident by the 16 GB - soon to be 32 GB - SD card in my 3DS, the 5 TB external I have on my Xbox One, and the 5 TB HDD I have in my PS4).

This is the drive I use with my Wii...

The 1TB version is only a few bucks more. If I ever have to get a HDD for my U, I'll likely get another one of these.

So does the U format the drive or anything? Would be useful being able to use this for multiple systems, but I'm not exactly sure how that would work.

Yeah, the Wii U formats the drive, so you can't use it for multiple systems, but from my understanding (I haven't tried this myself, so I can't attest to it personally), it will read partitions as separate drives, so you could theoretically get a 5 TB and have like a 1 TB partition for the Wii U, a 2 TB partition for an Xbox One, and a 2 TB partition for a PC assuming you didn't mind swapping the UBS cord.

The 1TB is cheaper, would it work as well?

Yes. It should work. The 500 GB was cheaper when I bought it, and I suspected that 500 GB was way more space than I would ever need for eShop games. If the 1 TB model is cheaper now, then you should go for that one.
