Not taking about the games themselves. Duke Nukem has always been a terrible character. He's just lame. He's always been lame. He's not funny. He's not cool. Not even that well designed. His lines are stolen from films. Duke is a creative vacuum.

Yeah the games were fun back in the day and I guess that's all that matters at the core.

Duke3D still rules. The new World Tour version is top notch and the new episode by a bunch of the old devs feels like something that could have been made in the 90's for sure, great stuff.

But definitely goomba material compared to Doom.

That's the joke.

He's every corny action movie cliche and generic macho stereotype distilled into a single person. It's a self-aware parody of the genre.

I don't think Randy Pitchford knows this today though, lol. Frankly, I don't think Duke Nukem Forever was that bad at all, especially for its time when everything was a CoD clone or crap, I liked how Forever had some classic boss battles which were a rarity for FPS's around then. Burger Town was still awesome and it gets good in the later half. That said, was it really necessary after all those years? Nah. I think the best thing they could have done with Duke, is make him a playable character in Borderlands 2+. Seems like an easy thing to do, but instead they throw him into the Bulletstorm remaster and it just looks freaking weird.

They've tried to keep Duke going and have essentially gone Terminator Genysis with it. Someone needs to pull the plug.

Doomguy is the last standing man here for sure. The way they built up lore around him in Doom 4 is ludicrously incredible.

Yes Duke is a parody but as a good Parody as Scary Movie. For the time it seemed alright but it's just bad regardless. Being a parody doesn't make him any less lame.

I'm not positive that this will be an unpopular opinion, but:

Akira Yuuki is a way better main character than that bum, Ryu; with a better stage theme to boot.

Duke Nukem is one of the greatest characters ever because he's everything most of us wish we could be but won't admit to anyone - including ourselves - that we wish we were Duke.

Also I second Xeogred about Duke Nukem Forever. I loved the game, single player and multiplayer. It was a 90s shooter in HD with 90s humor intact. More, please.

Duke is the most selfish and egotistical, self-indulgent ass and that is what makes him so great.

To go on a nostalgia trip, the n64 is the best version of duke Nukem on consoles. Yes, it is highly edited for a more family friendly audience, but it had split screen co-op and the deathmatches had a bajillion maps, wonky ai bots and it was just a true joy to play.

Truth. I'm partial to the Saturn release simply because it's on the Saturn and I have a hard-on for Sega's last two consoles, but the N64 is definitely the best version to play if you've got a friend with you.
