It's just not really my preferred style of platformer. Also, every power-up in this game, aside from the fire flower and star man, is 100% useless from a practical standpoint.
I found it to be one of the easiest SMB games ever. I beat it in a single sitting. I was so glad I had borrowed it from a friend rather than dropping $30 on it.
Yeah, it took me about two sittings to beat it, but I agree. If I had paid full price for this game when it was released, I probably would have been pretty upset.
I did, and wasn't. And I'm not a huge Mario fan myself.

Finally! This has been one of those games where I've started it, then I get distracted by another game after a few chapters. This was my third time starting it over, and I finally made it through. Very good game. Very tense situations and a story that kept me interested.

I played through the first DLC (The Signal). Going to knock out the second DLC tonight (The Writer) then shelve this one. It's time that it's finally taken off of my standby shelf.

Darius Gaiden is one of my all-time favorite shoot-em ups. My favorite entry into the Darius series, for sure. If you didn't enjoy this one, then you just might not like shoot-em ups.

31. Deathsmiles IIX (360)

Been playing Futari a lot lately, and having trouble beating lvl3 so I though I'd give Novice Mode a go to see if I could get the 1CC. That was really no problem. It's super easy on that mode pretty much until the last boss, but by then you've stock-piled so many bombs (and Novice Mode utilizes auto-bomb) so it's pretty hard to not coast thru. That said, it's still a pretty great game. I think it's safe to say that Cave is easily one of my favorite shmup developers, if not my actual favorite which it very well may be.

Image

Even crazier, I 1CC'd Deathsmiles IIX after only a half-dozen runs. I used Rosa, who has a crazy spreadshot to get the 1CC. Though I'd like to run through it using Casper as she was my favorite in the first game. Lei seems really good too. I'll say this, I don't like IIX as much as the first game. But it is still really fun. I just don't know that I've figured out the scoring yet. It doesn't seem as deep to me as the first DS. Maybe I'm just missing it though. And I don't find the levels quite as interesting, but at the same time I don't regret the $30 I spent on it. I'm glad that another shmup made it over here that's quality and would buy it again no question. Oh and by the way, it's got a super insane charm to it. Like the final boss is Santa. I guess anyway. It's all in Japanese. But I mean, in the first level he's riding on a big reindeer boss so... yeah. You fight Christmas themed enemies (with Christmas music to match) along with big snakes, spiders and Frankenstein's Monster. It's just really over the top. Almost Deathsmiles vs Parodius in HD.

07/09 Sonic CD - PS3
07/22 Ben There Dan That & Time Gentlemen Please - PC NEW
07/29 Batman: The Brave and the Bold - DS NEW

Both of these games were on my Summer List to beat, here is a brief summary of what I said in that thread:
"Ben There, Dan That" & "Time Gentlemen, Please".
The first episode is hilarious and the dialog is top notch.
Time Gentlemen, Please is more challenging from a puzzle standpoint but not as funny. With the first episode excelling in the dialog/humor department and the second installment excelling in the puzzle department, together these two parts create a fun and entertaining game.

Batman BATB is a game that is easy to beat but fun enough to play through.

Resident Evil 4 was a fantastic game that wasn't really for me. I enjoyed it well enough though.

Panzer Dragoon Orta was my second favourite in the series (I haven'y played Saga yet though), but I feel it may be a bit overcomplicated compared to the more enjoyable original, and I also feel that sometimes the game isn't very generous about teaching you new mechanics.

More comprehensive thoughts about both games can be found in the Summer Games Challenge thread, as both were beaten for that.

It's my favorite game in the series. Just a gorgeous and almost therapeutic game.

I've really wanted to play this game ever since seeing the commercials for it when it was released. I imagine a lot of people would have preferred a sequel more in the vein of Saga, but it looks like the culmination of the series stylistically and mechanically to me.

I picked the game up with the 360 a while back, but for various reasons, I still can't play it on the 360, and it tears me up inside every time I see it on my shelf. (It and JSRF.)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (1/12) PC
Mirror's Edge (1/18) PC
Medal of Honor [2010] (1/23) PC
Puzzle Agent 2 (2/2) PC
Dinner Date (2/15) PC
NyxQuest (2/19) PC
Dear Esther (2/20) PC
The Stanley Parable (2/21) PC
To The Moon (2/26) PC
Escape Goat (6/16) PC
Rayman Origins (6/17) PC
Robot Pinball Escape (6/18) PC
Offspring Fling (7/16) PC
The Darkness II (7/30) PC

The Darkness II has a really cool graphical style and some excellent voice acting. The story is fairly original; I mean, not that there is anything unique about mobsters or demons in videogames, but the way they are combined in this game is unique and I really like the way that the game alternates between scenes with the mob and the Darkness with scenes in a mental institution reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Even after finishing the game, I'm not sure if Jackie Estecado was really possessed or just hallucinating.

That being said, I have mixed feelings about the game. It's overly violent. I'm not one that is usually shocked by violence, but this game revels in it to a point of absurdity that detracts from the game and storyline. This games violence defines the word "gratuitous". There are close ups of throat slittings, decapitations, dismemberment, and the particularly disgusting "assecution" maneuver (If you have a sturdy stomach, see for yourself). I don't mind a bit of the ultraviolence now and again, but in The Darkness II it slows down the gameplay and it's so revolting that it detracts from your character. I actually don't like him because of the gameplay, even though he seems likeable enough in his character interactions. The man is (literally) a monster and it's not all that pleasant to roleplay.

The gameplay itself is pretty standard FPS fare, but things are fast paced and control well. The Darkness' serpentine arms add a unique bit of flavor to the melee combat, and the special powers you get are sort of cool, but over time make you so overpowered that the final scenes of the game are a breeze.

So final verdict: love the art style, setting, and voice acting. Story and gameplay were serviceable, but not revolutionary. The violence was too much. And not just because it was gross, but because it detracted from the rest of the game with all of the prolonged gore-porn shots.
