Re: Nintendo 3DS
I can still pop in a game into my SNES or Genesis and play it with no issues. They've gotten more playtime out of me in my life than my Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS combined, and both of those have already broke down on me. I had issues with the original Playstation and the Playstation 2 as well now that I think about it....and I was praising Sony in my previous post.ejamer wrote:I'd like to say that 3DS is a good system and reports of problems are outliers... but it really feels like the second half of that statement isn't true. Quality matters, and the quality of 3DS is lower than I expect for a piece of Nintendo hardware.
Sadly, this has become more and more of an issue as gaming tech gets more complicated. All three home consoles had quality issues this generation and the number of people I know who have bought "replacement" consoles when theirs breaks down is ridiculous. Even when issues are covered by warranties, nobody enjoys sending a broken system out for repair when they just want to be playing games.

There's something to be said for old hardware versus new. This applies to everything. Old tvs were built better and I had a refrigerator repair man once tell how crappy modern fridges are compared to old ones. I've even seen old houses that seem better built than modern ones

This old tech vs new tech thing again. Open up an old console. It's a pretty basic circuit. Open up a new console.....FUCK.....Gamerforlife wrote:

Which reminds me. I remember exclaiming when I got the PS2 that it must be really powerful because it was loud. Since at the time I was... 7 or 8 and my PS1 and Genesis didn't have a fan.

I can remember seeing a really old computer tower when I was younger (the kind with a "turbo" button) and thinking it must be pretty powerful.

Wait, the PS1 didn't have a fan, but it had a CD drive? Shouldn't this have caused overheating?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Exactly.ZeroAX wrote:This old tech vs new tech thing again. Open up an old console. It's a pretty basic circuit. Open up a new console.....FUCK.....Gamerforlife wrote:

Erm. The Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Turbo CD, and many PCs (iMac G3 comes to mind) didn't have fans, and all had disc drives.GameMasterGuy wrote: Wait, the PS1 didn't have a fan, but it had a CD drive? Shouldn't this have caused overheating?
Portable CD players didn't have fans.
DVD and Blu-Ray players don't.
So no, it doesn't. A CD drive creates barely any (if any) heat. The PS1 did, early on, tend to overheat though.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
Oh, thought that it was a pretty big deciding factor. Fan status from my point of view before seeing your post:
Sega: GEN had no fan, DC had one.
Sony: PS2 onwards had fans, now I know PS1 didn't.
Nintendo: SNES/N64 had no fans, and Gamecube lacked another kind of fa- *shot* (just making fun of how the GC isn't as appreciated as the PS2, I'm a personal fan, so don't quote this and post a text wall of all the reasons it's underrated)
Microsoft: 360 has a fan.
Now then, on-topic, what's everyone's thoughts on the 3D itself? I find it to be a gimmick in most games, but it genuinely helps in flying games like PilotWings and they flying segments of Rayman 2 toward the end of the game.

It's okay in racing games. Otherwise I don't care for it. I'd rather have the higher resolution.GameMasterGuy wrote:Oh, thought that it was a pretty big deciding factor. Fan status from my point of view before seeing your post:
