That angle I can understand, battling your Pokemon VS someone else's.

That's how it always appears. The graphics and presentation improve, but the game design seems rigidly confined.

That's why I said a good game for 8 year olds, or rather young kids with tons of free time. It's all too mindless and sloggy to hold my interest for long. I say that based on watching various Youtube videos showing random Pokemon entries, as well as playing a few of these games myself for short segments.

I have played through 4 Pokemon games and did not find them to be grind heavy in the least. At no point did I ha e to grind longer than maybe 10 minutes to tackle some gyms. The main storylines are easy if you have a solid team competition. I would never play a heavy grind game as I find them wastes of time.

The key to enjoying this series is to NOT catch them all. Get stuff you find to be strong and you like and work with it. Usually when a gym comes up, a Pokemon or two in the wild nearby will be strong against them and you may spend some time levelling them up, but not much.

Yeah, I guess for the single-player content, if you're not going for a complete Pokedex, it's not so bad. Pretty sure those plots won't keep me enthralled, though.

What about the plots? Were the plots all highly varied and unique? Or is this the same story over and over again. It always seems like the same plot every time based on reviews I've read.

So at its most basic level, it is the same. You are a kid set on a journey to collect Pokemon and defeat the elite 4 and be a Pokemon master.

Sounds super basic, but the journey to get there is quite varied. The original set of Pokemon games had a more vague story and had little bits and pieces that you could fill in, but they perfectly encapsulated this little kid going on an adventure.

As the series progressed, the stories revolved more around these evil organizations he'll bent on world domination by harnessing the powers of legendary Pokemon.

Usually, the plots are similar for 2 consecutive sets of games and then make advances in how the plots play out. Pokemon sun and moon is a completely different beast with some huge shakeups in the formula and is very refreshing, although I only know this from second hand information as I am waiting on the switch release.

Thanks for the information.

If you were going to single out one DS or 3DS Pokemon game as the best, what would it be?

From what I've seen of Sun and Moon it does look like it really shakes things up a bit in terms of presentation.

I know the underlying Pokemon stats and hidden abilities are really meaningful, too, but I don't know much about them. I'm sure the game is fairly complex for the people who are obsessed with it. I am not.

If you want an authentic feeling 'classic' Pokémon experience, either Heart Gold/Soul Silver, or Black 2/White 2.

They're all good in my eyes, but Diamond and Pearl are probably the weakest.

I would second this statement. Gold and Silver are great without watering it down with tons of extra activities. Start with that and then move on up to maybe black/white and then sun/moon those three sets vary up the story a bunch and are good segues into the ramp up of different activities and systems.
