yeah I'm just doing the physical collecting thing with hip hop CD's now. I've just always been so nerdy w/ the genre. So it's nice to go back and try to find these physical CD's I grew up with. But also, because I have always gotten into caring about the production credits, or samples cleared - stuff like that. And plus a lot of the stuff that has meant a lot to me at a young age is now hitting 10, 15, 20 year anniversaries and getting fancy physical re-issues with cool artwork and essays included that you just don't get w/ a digital copy.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I did the digital switch too. I only buy about four or five CDs per year. Which is odd, because I still strongly prefer physical media when it comes to video games. I've never considered myself a "collector" of music I guess.

Lately I've been wanting to start collecting CD's but I don't really see the practical use of it. It's not like I'm going to carry a CD player around. Still kinda want to though.

I guess it's a bit like the played-out "emulation vs. real hardware" debates around here. Whatever makes sense for you y'know? Heck, the vast majority of my music is mp3's. But I've just gotten into the idea of collecting hip hop CD's as a bit of an archival project I guess. Most of the stuff I've picked up I already owned on my HDD. Heck, most of them I already owned on CD and ripped myself. But it's kind of nice to have a collection so I can thumb though booklets. There's also something to be said for selecting a CD and putting it in the player. For instance, while I've got a 16GB SD card in my phone, it's kind of cool to decide on one album to bring in the car and just focus on that for a day.oxymoron wrote:Lately I've been wanting to start collecting CD's but I don't really see the practical use of it. Hey fellas. I m a huge 90's hip hop fan from nyc and in 94 started listening to the new york live sessions on 89.1 fm wnyu on wed and thur 10:30pm -1:00 am. I then started to listen to stretch and bobbito on thursdays as well from 1:00 to 5:00 on 89.9 fm. There were always live guest free styling and not no small acts either. Mic geronimo, royal flush, sunz of man, killarmy, natural elements, onyx, company flow, camp lo, nine, cella dwellas, heltah skeltah, Jugganots, Showbiz and Ag, Ill and al skratch, Rass kass, Big L, Big mass, the entire wu tang clan. Come to think of it that skit on their first album right after protect your neck was on 89.1 with Martin Moore conducting the interview and Dj Mayhem on the wheels of steel. I love this era and have a ton of mix tapes that I made with these old gems. I am thinking of uploading them to you tube if anyone is interested.

I'm the same. I really want to collect hip hop CDs because not only are they cheap (£1-£3, or less than $5) but because I still tend to listen to CDs in the car. I actually picked up the Run DMC discography, including their Live at Montreux 2001 DVD for £8. It's interesting reading through the liner notes, as noise mentions - plus there is the "collection" aspect that also applies to video games. The only thing that bugs me is that I could splash £100 on CDs and find they are worth next to nothing in five years time, or splash £100 on video games and recoup some of it if I need to find cash. Another reason is storage, as I actually sold my large collection last year as they resided in an ugly cabinet and never really got used. But just as when you sell video games, a year after you get rid of them, you want them back!oxymoron wrote:Lately I've been wanting to start collecting CD's but I don't really see the practical use of it. Hell yeah! Get them online, I love that era. One of the few CDs I own is "Cellar Sounds Volume 1" by Nick Wiz, a 2-disc compilation of New York hip hop that's entrenched in that gritty, boom bap vibe. It's mostly stuff by Shabaam Sahdeeq, Ran Reed and Cella Dwellas, but some early tracks with Biggie, DMX and MOP are on there. The era fascinates me and even the lesser emcees know how to flow to a beat which seems to be a lost art nowadays. You still felt that element of fun, even in hardcore rappers like Big L and Onyx that was passed down from the 80s.segasaturnboy wrote:Hey fellas. that would be awesome.segasaturnboy wrote:I love this era and have a ton of mix tapes that I made with these old gems. I am thinking of uploading them to you tube if anyone is interested.
I don't know, I guess it depends on the CD. There's lots of out of print albums that command a pretty penny. And lots of common ones worth pennies. I suppose it's a lot like video games really... Either way, I tend to buy neither with the thought of what they'll be worth in a year or two.Razzmatazz wrote:The only thing that bugs me is that I could splash £100 on CDs and find they are worth next to nothing in five years time, or splash £100 on video games and recoup some of it if I need to find cash.

Since you like Nas, I thought I'd show you this. They are doing a 20th anniversary reprint for Illmatic. They're exclusives to Nas' official website. There's a bunch of different bundles. Bit pricey IMO but it's still cool to check out.
