I have mixed feelings on the Dark Souls difficulty thing. While I don't think it would ruin it and you certainly don't have to use it, it just seems off.
Is it really that wrong to have one popular series that refuses to be forgiving? I don't want to sound elitist about it or anything, I just don't think every game necessarily needs to be beatable. It's not like Dark Souls is the norm or anything, it's an outlier.
I can understand if your game is meant to convey a narrative that it should be beatable by anyone, but for stuff like the Souls series the difficulty is half the point.
I can sympathize with arguments like, "I don't have the time to master X game," but my response to that is then just don't play that game. I'm not sure a version that compromises what makes the game unique or good in the first place would be worth playing anyway. But that's just me. I love the world of Dark Souls but without the feeling of surmounting something that was previously insurmountable it would lose much of its identity.
I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, I would just find an "easy" Dark Souls boring and I think most other people would too. That doesn't necessarily mean they shouldn't do it.

I'd counter that is Dark Souls such a hollow and empty experience that it has no story, no atmosphere, no stage design, creative elements at all that would be a fun experience to enjoy if it wasn't pissing you off every minute you play from all the contrived hard as hell kill your ass experiences?
If that's the case, sure, leave it alone. Otherwise, there's no excuse to not let average people who enjoy that kind style of game from taking a whack at it where losing 10+x in a row every 20ft you walk isn't what they have time to deal with anymore.

Sarge was nice enough to let me play his for a bit.
Positive: It has a really nice screen, great picture quality.
Negative: The Joy-Cons are very tiny, and holding them for a prolonged period would definitely cause my hands to start hurting.
I came away unimpressed because it just seemed like Nintendo's version of the Vita. That's not to say it's a bad console or won't end up with a killer library of games. I just wasn't personally impressed by the hardware on offer.

Anyone can enjoy Dark Souls. Its not for everyone, but its like a 30 hour game, and its really not that difficult, it just isn't an interactive movie.
There is absolutely a reason to not allow easier difficulty, since doing so could very well override the goal that the developers have for their game.
Practically everyone I knew back in the day that played DMC, died on the first boss until they unlocked Easy mode, and then beat the game on that and never touched it again. If given the choice, a lot of people will take the path of least resistance. And if creating a path like that takes away from your product, then you shouldn't do it, because as Souls has proven, a lot of those people will still play, and possibly more thoroughly appreciate your product, if you present it in the fashion that you intended for it to be played.

Yeah I think those devs might win me over with this one. I've kept up on it, one negative seems to be very repetitive environments... but I'm a sucker for sci-fi and the look it has, maybe I won't care. Definitely on my radar to check out! It gives me fun B-grade Red Faction vibes. lol
But this is the best option for me right now, I played the final alpha and is was godly. Basically... just need to beat some other new games and free up the schedule.

Exactly. Well said.
Another option for people is just don't play Dark Souls, ya know? There's tons of other games to play. Why single out one game and say "I want it to be easy so I can beat it quickly". That's entitlement gaming if I've ever seen it. I said it before, and I'll say it again; not everything is for everybody. I'm personally A-OK with that. There's plenty of popular shmups and rhythm games I can't play worth a damn, but I'd never dream of demanding the developers provide an easy mode for me to win. I just accept that unless I'm willing to put the time and effort in, I'm not going to get anywhere in those games. Fair enough.

I not had beaten any souls game but is not THAT hard... yes they are hard but in the way that tests your patience. I got round 20 hours when i played demon souls and about 10 of dark souls and at some point i just get my "fix" and dont feel like playing them anymore. Definetly i prefer something a bit less punishing and more fast paced, i can see myself trying the diferent DS clones that are coming out because i do enjoy the combat style of the games.

I personally don't think it would ruin it. After all, the Ninja Gaiden reboots have difficulty settings, and no one that I know of hates them because they have "ninja dog" mode. It sure didn't impact my enjoyment on "normal", anyway.
