What are you listening to at the present? (genres helpful)

Well, the "traditional" country scene blasted John Denver for being pop-friendly back in the day. You could argue he helped open the door so many others have walked through.

Pop music.
Last year's Summer had hits like "Ain't it fun?", "Chandelier", "One Less Problem", "Fancy", "Girls Chase Boys", "Talk dirty to me", "Dark Horse", "Shake it off" and a few others. Catchy tunes that were dumb, but fun. This year... ouch.
And I rarely get into pop music, but last year was pretty great for Summer hits and new artists. Last year the pop music was rather self aware, fun, and even if it made you grind your teeth (see "Rude") it was good catchy pop music. This year though...Yikes.
There is one song I love that has the lyrics "diddy do, diddy don't" that I don't know the title to, but it's almost Emerson Lake and Palmer-ish.
So I'm back to classical music for now.

how recent is T-Swift's "Style"? That one's good. But yeah, pretty meh Summer as far as pop is going. Charli XCX's "Break The Rules" is good too, but again not sure it's all that new.
That Britney/Iggy collab is embarrassingly bad.
Not exactly pop, but The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face" is catchy as F.

Style is more of tail track for 1989, no? And I forgot to add XCX's "Boom Clap" on my list which is another one of my last Summer's favorites. You could place that song in THE BREAKFAST CLUB and it wouldn't seem out of place. "Turnt down for what?" was also hilarious and not that "good" but it sure did turn a gathering into a party.noiseredux wrote:how recent is T-Swift's "Style"? That one's good. "Bitch I'm Madonna" is decent, which says a lot. Sounds a lot more like something Pink would write (na na na na na na na) but it does have great energy.
Fancy was last years Summer banger, and the year before that was Thrift Shop. I have no clue what this year's club banger is. In fact, when Thrift Shop comes on, that's when people lose their stuff. No one jumps up and says "That's my Shit!" when Bad Blood comes through the speakers.
It's early July, so who knows?

Nice piecle on Kacey Musgraves this morning on NPR. Should be easy to find.
My made-up Musgrave lyric would be : Mind your own brownies, or kindly fudge off.

Yesterdays New Universe
Yesterdays New Universe
2007, This self-titled album by Yesterdays New Universe is really more of a compilation of various incarnations of its members. Confusingly, most of the groups are Otis "Madlib" Jackson, Jr. but now he's got Karriem Riggins and the great Ivan Conti of Azymuth along for the ride as well. And maybe some other players as well. Who knows? Blurred reality and a confusing mythology have always been part of Yesterdays New Quintet's allure and charm. What is clear however is that while YNQ at least started as a solo project, it morphed into some kind of vague collective over the years. Thus the Quintet exploded into an entire Universe introduced here. As a compilation, this collection is incredible. It boils down to this: Madlib loves jazz - all jazz. And so with the freedom of creating as many new ensembles as he wishes, he also grants himself to investigate whatever facet of jazz that he wants to. The freer and more challenging work of the New Jazz Rebels rubs elbows with the more far-out and atmospheric Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble. Jackson Conti's borderline exotica sounds comfortable next to Otis Jackson, Jr. Trio's taut take on Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew." Indeed Madlib along with Riggins and Conti have created something of a survey of modern jazz that has been filtered through lifetimes of turntable spins. It is a truly excellent collection that serves as introduction to the many sides of YNQ and its offshoots old (Sound Directions, Otis Jackson Jr. Trio, Ahmad Miller) and new, as well as introducing those who are interested in many jazz sub-genres from across the globe all while paying close attention to the importance of album sequencing so as never to feel jarring or intimidating. Highly recommended!
