You should have known better. Until you can beat halo with an arcade stick, it is mouse and keyboard in this house!
We make an exception for Wiimote and DDR pad.

Old news. You want the eight core i7.flex wood wrote:Hex core i7 noise
Someone let me know when they finally have a reasonably priced (aka < $1k) 2TB SSD so I can finally SSD up my main drive.

Re: PC build thread
We'll get there within 8 months I'm sure of it. Samsung just debuted the 850 Pro which uses 3D NAND layout instead of a traditional flat PCB and so a 2tb SSD that is actually reliable should be just on the horizon. Looking forward to testing out the performance of the 512gb. Should be here next week but wont be able to really try it out till I get a hold of a friends external enclosure to back up and transfer.MrPopo wrote:Old news. Why stop there? Put full fledged server CPUs in the box. Dual 15 core Xeons.MrPopo wrote:Old news. You want the eight core i7.flex wood wrote:Hex core i7 noise
2 x 1TB SSDs at < $500 would be the best option.MrPopo wrote:Someone let me know when they finally have a reasonably priced (aka < $1k) 2TB SSD so I can finally SSD up my main drive.

Put those in RAID to behave as a single drive, and you'd be in business.
As soon as SATA III SSD drives come out in 2TB size, it won't be in the $6K range for it.
Re: PC build thread
Old news? They released at the same time though. Either way you would be looking at at least $300 on the mobo alone with any of those chips.MrPopo wrote:Old news. You want the eight core i7.flex wood wrote:Hex core i7 noise

Hex core came out a year ago, the 8 core i7 was revealed at PAX this year; I was at Intel's event where they revealed it.flex wood wrote:Old news? They released at the same time though. I'd rather not RAID 0 my primary system drive. Especially since the reason I need a 2 TB drive is I have EVERY game installed so I really don't want to deal with 2x the failure rate.2 x 1TB SSDs at < $500 would be the best option.

Ah I see what you are talking about. I meant this chip here that was released at the same time as the one one you posted and runs on the same chipset as that one.MrPopo wrote:Hex core came out a year ago, the 8 core i7 was revealed at PAX this year; I was at Intel's event where they revealed it.

Re: PC build thread
Have you looked at hybrids? It'll give you the majority of the speed you require (it uses something like 8GB of SSD to cache disc usage patterns), and the price point you want.MrPopo wrote:the reason I need a 2 TB drive is I have EVERY game installed
It's not quite as fast as SSD alone (1.5x speed?), but it's much faster than an HDD, especially after running the software more than once.
2TB is about $115, 4TB is about $170.
Game performance beyond the first time running is virtually identical to a full SSD. Operating System boot times are middling between SSD and HDD times.
None the less, a significant improvement that barely costs more than an HDD.
Re: PC build thread
I'd considered it, but I feel like if I did get one I'd just want to get a full SSD once it became affordable. I'm willing to wait until I can get the real thing.
