It's done by basically lowering the dynamic range of a piece of audio through compression and then boosting the signal so that it is almost clipping or is actually hard clipping which adds artificial harmonics into the mix and sometimes sounds quite nice if done well on analogue mastering equipment)

So the PSP3000...

They've made a better screen and changed the logo to the other side and then decreased the already poor battery life?

Something makes me think, why bother?!
The battery life has been fixed now. They also improved the button responsivness again. Buttons are somewhat different. And mabe its just me but 8 hours is more than enough battery life.

We'll see what the performance is like when it actually gets released.

I don't really trust Sony's word on anything these days.

I think sony has forgotten they're trying to make a game console. The PSP works well as a portable media machine [although a hacked DS with moonshell does the exact same things], but the PSP is really lacking in good games. Sure, every now and then you get a good game like Crush, Patapon, or Echochrome, but every console has at least one or two good games. The rest of the PSP library consists entirely of either ports of games, non-exclusives, or games that are just plain not fun. I commend Sony for making a good media machine, but that's really all it should be used for. Same with the PS3.
