That's what I was trying to remember! For some reason, I thought there was a mech unit in the game from my hazy recollections of my brother playing through the game.

"Mechanized" is a slippery slope. We slide that way people will start saying cyborgs count as mechs and such. Let's not go there!

I also loved Total Annihilation and played a ton of that... but I bet nobody here can comment on the campaign.

You mean the world-hopping campaign where my Core legions traversed the Galaxy, engaging in multiple conflicts on each planet as I drive the terrorist Arm forces back to annihilation, first from my metal Core planets and to their eventual demise?

They're not bad missions, but playing through them does always make me miss having access to a full build roster. Also, Core admittedly has a nasty early game disadvantage due to the AK's limited firepower compared to the Arm's Peewee. Missions that focus on tactical assaults as opposed to strategic base building and defense are generally tougher for Core as a result. Because I'll say it, the AK sucks.

I'm sure I would be sad going the Core route because you'd have the more limited metal stream come end game. And I found the campaign devolved into "build all the gunships" as it went on.

Yeah, there was a lot of constructing heavy artillery and using it to pound base defenses before launching bombing runs.

Premillennial Mech Madness is in the lead, so I'll touch on the "probably". The idea is playing mech games that released before 2000. By "mech games", I mean games in which the player directly controls a mech most of the time.* With Battlezone '98, you only control the Sasquatch unit once in a while, there are many other units you control more often, which are not mechs. In that regard, I would not consider Battlezone '98 a fit for "Premillennial Mech Madness", though said game would be a perfect fit for "Classic '90s RTS".


*As in at least 90% of the time okay? There are some mech games like Front Mission 3 or Gun Hazard where occasionally you run around (as an on foot pilot) outside your mech, I don't want to exclude those.

Anyone who hasn't played the remake of Assault Suit Leynos (a.k.a. Target Earth) should absolutely consider it if Mech Madness wins. It offers on the fly switching of graphics, a few nice additions and perks, and is one of the best of its genre.

I love you. My love for this game is no secret. The Assault Suits games are great. There is a remake on PS2 as well of Valken (Cybernator) Both remakes, as far as I know, are the exact same game with updated visuals and music. Well ok, I think the remake added a couple mechanic changes but either way I agree with your post.

Dragon Quest Spin-Offs
I'm not super strongly attached to this category, but I am interested in a few games here. For this I would probably play Torneko: The Last Hope and/or Dragon Warrior Monsters. I could also play any of the other games in the Dragon Quest Monsters series since my fiancee owns them all

Classic 90's RTS
Oh god I'm super duper awful at RTS games. I'm sure I could find something to try, but this one would definitely be a little more difficult for me.

80s Ladies
This one could be good. I would need to do a bit of research into exactly what I would want to play, but it's definitely a category that sounds interesting. Off your list, Time Gal looks like something I could try.

Koei Classics
While there are quite a number of strategy games here, I know that there are a few games that I would be interested in playing like Saiyuki: Journey West (it doesn't look too difficult for a strategy game), Crimson Seas 2 (can't play the first one right now), and maybe Kessen 3. Angelique would also be neat to play if it had some sort of English translation

Premillennial Mech Madness
I'm not usually particularly interested in mechs, but it seems like there is a wide selection of games here so I don't think it would be too difficult finding something that I could play. I'm not very familiar with mech games though so I would need to do a little digging around.

For now I'm voting for Dragon Quest and Mechs. If I find something in a different category that I super duper want to play then I might change my vote.

Is M.U.S.H.A. a mech game? I’ve always wanted to play it. I can’t tell if it’s a mech though from screenshots. It looks like it is...

Or I might do Virtual On? Is the Saturn or Dreamcast one better? I would just be playing with a traditional controller (as cool as the twin stick looks). I assume the Dreamcast one still counts even though the NA release was 2000, since it released in Japan in 1999.

Now I just need to my TV hooked up.

I've been putting off playing the Mazinger Z beat'em up for far too long so I might use this as an excuse to beat it. Perfect timing and such with the new movie screening in the US on Sunday.
