I played the first level last night and was.... underwhelmed. I feel like this game got a lot of love when it first hit as a pre-order bonus. I'm not sure if I was expecting something more but it feels pretty generic to me at first impression.dunpeal2064 wrote:Definitely curious to see what people think of King's Tale. Having already played it, I am just glad that they didn't decide to charge anything.

That was the same impression I was left with. The combat system is nice, but the enemies and level layout are generic and repetitive, and it felt like you'd go through like 5 levels of that before getting to a boss.
It also does a thing I hate where it gives you a moveset, and then presents enemies that require specific moves to be used.
"Oh, this enemy is only weak to strong attacks" "You can only use your shield bash on this enemy"
I guess thats variety, but I don't feel like a badass stringing together my own concoction of attacks. I feel like I am playing Simon Says with a sword.

alright so it sounds like the impression I got from one level is an impression I'd keep if I kept playing then!
Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
Okay so to take this topic into another direction for a second, what are some of your favorite SNES beat em' ups? I could never really get into the SNES Battletoads. I think I've played a decent chunk, but would like to hear if I'm missing some good ones now that I have a Buffalo SNES pad.
Batman Returns
Final Fight series
Rushing Beat series
TMNT Turtles in Time
Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage
And suddenly I'm drawing a blank but I'm sure there's more.
I dig Batman Returns a lot, but Maximum Carnage not so much. Both have weirder gimmicky stages and I'm not sure I've ever actually beaten Maximum Carnage.

This thread has me craving some Dungeon Magic.
Medieval RPG beat 'em ups are the best beat 'em ups.

Do you wish to include hack and slash like King of Dragons?Xeogred wrote:Okay so to take this topic into another direction for a second, what are some of your favorite SNES beat em' ups? Ninja Warriors is a good one.
Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
I like Super Double Dragon a lot. Also, I played through Pirates of Dark Water, which is better than you'd think for a licensed game.

Knights of the Round.
It's a bit overrated if ebay prices are anything to go by but it's a decent game nonetheless.

Better to just get a Capcom compilation and play the emulated arcade original, in my opinion.
