What do you consider "short" to be? Honestly there are a ton of games across a wide variety of genres that can be cleared relatively quickly if you know what you're doing. Heck, here's a list that includes a few fighting games, platformers, puzzle games, point and clicks, racing, RPGs, etc:

Tetris
Ultima (use a guide)
Mega Man 1-6
Mega Man X
Super Mario Bros
Mario Kart
Combat (Atari 2600)
Street Fighter II
Final Fight
Streets of Rage
Double Dragon
Commando
Mercs
SonSon
Karateka
The Secret of Monkey Island
Uninvited
Kirby's Dream Land
1942
Duck Hunt
R.C. Pro-Am

Many of these can be cleared in under an hour, and none should take over ten hours to beat.

Have you beaten Kid Icarus? It was created by some of Nintendo's legendary designers, including Yoshio Sakamoto and Gunpei Yokoi...who started contributing to the game's development immediately after completing Metroid. While they are very different games, Kid Icarus and Metroid share composers, designers, developers, and directors; they run on the same engine; and they came out the same year. Accordingly, I think that descriptions of Kid Icarus and Metroid as "brother and sister" games is completely accurate.

Also, Kid Icarus is a lot of challenging, old-fashioned fun, and I think you would enjoy it.

Finally...
I like Kid Icarus, but it sure does have a weird difficulty balance.

Stages 1-3 and 1-4 are brutal, but basically all of world 2 is pretty simple mainly sue to you having more health and much more opportunity to gather hearts to buy upgrades.

World 3 is harder than 2, but never causes me as many issues as 1-3 did.

relative to its genre, I suppose. Like I'd consider any RPG under 10 hours to be short. But I'd consider a platformer that took me 10 hours to be long.

I'll comment on some of your suggestions, excluding games I've already beaten or played a lot of.

Ultima (use a guide) - the series intrigues me. I'd still like to play IV, though as I slept on it for TR.

Mega Man 1-6
Mega Man X - X is one of my favorite MM games of all time. My current DOS save is right outside Sigma's room. I have played lots of MM 1-3. 4-6 I've played *some* of. The only other X I played was X4, and loved it.

SonSon - I don't know what this is.

Uninvited - played this a bit. I think I hate those ICOM games. Too many dead-ends.

SonSon is a 2D sidescrolling platformer put out by Capcom in 1984. It features co-op, and it's the oldest game I know of based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West. While you may not recognize it, the game had an impact on Capcom, and elements such as characters have come back occasionally in games like Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

I guess part of the problem is that I'm fairly open to most genres right now

But to narrow it down a bit, I don't want to play many super long games (I remembered I had Xenogears so I wouldn't want anything else really long), I think ~20-30 hrs at the very most? Also don't want to play any heavy real-time strategy (is that what games similar to Starcraft are?) and nothing super spooky scary.

So, yeah suggestions? :>

EDIT: Didn't realize I accidently got rid of my original post ._.
What I have so far is:

- Super Mario World (SNES)
- Ultimate DOOM (GOG)
And maybe Xenogears (PS1)
Ack wrote: And yes, DOOM counts. Ultimate DOOM includes the fourth episode, which is effectively an expansion. You should aim to at least beat the first three episodes. Just remember: if it's huge, that means it has huge guts!
Ah good to know. I thought Ultimate DOOM had something to do with the original DOOM but I wasn't sure. That's just what I got off of GOG ha.

I agree completely. The game actually gets much, much easier the further you get into it. (As you mentioned, 1-3 is absolutely brutal.)
