Why I Rarely Complete Long Games

Yeah, as much sacrilege as it may be, Tetris has never been my gaming drug of choice. I generally don't care for the falling-block puzzlers.

When I was in college/law school I could be playing more than one "long" game at a time. Now, it's a little overwhelming to even think about doing that.

Yes, I too only play one single player RPG at a time.

I personally don't get the same kind of satisfaction out of Tetris as I would say Tactics Ogre. For me, Tetris is just a fun distraction, and if that's all one wants out of a game session than that's cool. Long JRPGs and SRPGs though tickle other parts of my brain and thus are cerebrally satisfying. And epic plots can suck you in and make you feel more involved with the experience as a whole.

I actually really like strategy games but my preference is normally the non-story driven 4X genre on the PC. I am a big fan of the Civilization series and games like Endless Legend.

But to me those are a lot like the arcade-style games that I like to play - you can leave them alone for a long, long time and come back to an old save and not wonder, "What the hell is going on in this game again?" or "Why are my characters in this area and what were we supposed to be doing?" or "Who IS that guy/girl/NPC?"

4X games are my jam, yo. I'm terrible at them competitively because I always prefer playing very long term almost sim-like games based on diplomacy and maintaining an empire, but they're amazing. Civ V is one of my all-time favorite games.

I would consider 10 hours too long.

A hundred hours? That just sounds ludicrous - you may as well say "a million bajillion" hours.

I would honestly have a hard time playing any game for more than three hours.

Don't want to sound like I'm judging you or anything, just curious. But do you honestly mean that you tend to get bored of any game you play after 3-4 hours? You just don't like doing the same thing for too long, or am I misunderstanding what you mean?

Yep that's pretty much why I like longer RPGs as well (assuming they're good of course). You can't usually get much or any character development if the game is only a few hours, and that's what really sucks me into a game. I unfortunately don't have very good focus though, so beating them does take a lot longer than I would like (ie Dungeon Travellers 2), but I'm not too bothered by taking it one small piece at a time as long as I can save.
