Responding to Spacebooger:
I'm not sure that I've ever run into a GG straight up not turning on after a recap, but maybe you still got a faulty cap in there (it can happen even with new caps, some are just low quality to begin with).

Also,
I wonder if switching the power board with a different one would help?
(Stay away from GG's whose serial # start with a K, those power boards like to fry the system, in my experience).

It turned on just fine the last couple years (the recap was done a couple years ago) so maybe the new caps went bad.
I checked the serial number and it starts with P not K.
Hmm... I was just ready to promote my power leveled characters in Shining Force too.

I've been wondering what it would be like to replace GG's all with ceramic caps.
Haven't even looked into it, but it would probably last longer (assuming that's the problem).

I intend to try it some time, and if it works well, there's a Turbo Express I own (in need of a recap) that deserves the same treatment.

Interesting but I would wonder would you likely care in a few decades if the GG still worked? :) Doubt it will get daily heavy use for years.

I for one can't wait for my console5 cap kit and my led light replacement to show up so I can set up sending it off. I think I get bundle 1 today in the mail which had g-loc in it with a couple sonic games and columns.

If I'm still alive, yes I will care.
Sometimes I think all my gaming habits come down to seeing what else I can do with systems and whether I can get things to play (hacking, flash carts, pc installs, patches, etc.)

So I'm not sure if ceramic caps are a good idea now. I heard that they can change their uf rating based on operating temp (or something like that).
So maybe I'll just replace caps with regular electrolytic cans on a couple GG systems every 5 to 10 years.

Well is it really the system causing it or crap quality caps? I'd think 5-10 years would be excessive if it's just cheap caps Sega used in the first place if you replace them with something high quality they should keep going.

Yesterday was fun, I got both my lots of GG games in the mail, 11 in all, good solid cheap titles, nothing crazy, but was super jazzed to have Aerial Assault in the larger lot. I ended up play testing them all. One though confused me, maybe it's those caps slowly going on mine but Castle of Illusion was flickering, none of my other games do this.

Aerial Assault, Bust a Move, Castle of Illusion, Columns, Ecco, G-Loc, Jurassic Park, Mortal Kombat, NHL Allstar, Soinc Spinball, Sonic 2

Adding to MK2, X-Men, World Series Baseball, and Lion King. All around a nice selection of stuff.

Odd about the flickering.
I had that problem way back when I would play a game that used "Sega Master System Mode", either from a Master Gear converter or a game that was a straight port (like Prince of Persia).
But Land of Illusion is a different game than on the SMS (unless it just uses that mode anyways).
--edit--
I should mention that a recap fixed the issue. No flickering with SMS games now.

Maybe it will shake out with the recap and the mod I'll have done to it. I think the SMS and GG games are the same, I recall something about it being a direct conversion, maybe a bit too direct.

My favorite GG game is Shinobi, I spent so much time with it as a kid and it still delights today when I power it up for a little while.

The sequel is even better (Shinobi II: Silent Fury).
Both games are excellent.
