Hey guys, do any of you have any experience with Dark Night of the Scarecrow?



It's a made-for-TV film, but after watching the trailer, I'm really interested in seeing it. Plus with a quote from Vincent Price praising it on the poster, I must know if it's worth tracking down!

Yes! One of the best made-for-TV horror films I've seen. You won't be disappointed.

I would agree that the early '00s were pretty bad for horror, but there were some excellent horror movies during the second part of the decade. In fact, I could probably make a pretty good argument that the last five years have been the best period for horror filsm since the lat 1970s.

Also...I have not see Dark Night of the Scarecrow, but I have read about it. If you pick it up, please let us know what you think.

I honestly can't think of many that I would consider to be "quality" horror movies, except for Insidious and possibly the Evil Dead Remake. I haven't seen World War Z yet, but I don't think I would consider that to be horror. What did you have in mind?

I actually hated Insidious; so, I won't count that one...

Off the top of my head, however, I would list:

Black Death
Black Swan
Drag Me to Hell
The House of the Devil
The Innkeepers
The Last Exorcism
Let Me In
Let the Right One In
Monsters
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

I have also heard good things about, but have not seen The Conjuring, The Evil Dead, The Lords of Salem, Mama, Scream 4, Shutter Island, and Stake Land. I am sure I could list some more if I did a little research - and I know I could list a lot more if I went back a few more years - but overall, I think that the last few years have been really good for horror films.

Large studios discovered that horror movies are a dependable source of income; so, we are seeing more (relatively) big-budget productions. Moreover, the advent of quality digital video and the ubiquity of high-speed internet connections has allowed more people to make and distribute low-budget horror.

Black Swan? The one with Natalie Portman? Please tell me you don't mean that one, haha.

Yes, I do.

First, it is awesome. Second, it is most definitely a soft core, body horror, exploitation film. (I didn't say that all of these had to be scary - Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is definitely a horror-comedy - but they are all very good.)

Yes! One of the best made-for-TV horror films I've seen. You won't be disappointed.

Highly recommended, kind of movie that stays with you a long time after. Especially in the midst of viewing contemporary horror to show how overrated gratuitous gore, unrealistically attractive actors, shaky cams, and MTV style editing are in most modern horror films.

What about Frontier(s), Fido, the Hatchet series, Slither, Teeth, The Descent, Grotesque, The Mist, Zombieland, Trick 'r Treat, Martyrs, etc.?


And now I must say that I'm going to track down Dark Night of the Scarecrow!

Ahh, well, let's just say we have different tastes in horror then. I actually did like Black Swan, but I don't consider it anywhere near a horror film - more a dark drama. When I think horror, I think of Alien (one of the best mainstream horror/terror movies ever made, in my opinion). I don't think I would consider any movie to be both horror AND comedy - it's one or the other for me. I don't think I could be afraid and laugh at the same time...

+1 for The Descent, but only the first one. The second one was an insult to the first movie...
