I thought it was pretty widely agreed that the NGX was horrible?

I only have mvs and I collect and play. Don't question mike. He is a huge gamer as anybody on this site. Nobody cares how many hours you log on call of duty or wow. Don't slam him because he has a better job than you.

Brad to the rescue! I can assure you my post was not meant to be derogatory. Plus, Mike is a big guy and can handle himself. Slinging brogamer insults doesn't help anything or anyone and there's already a thread for that. Mike having a better job or making more money is irrelevant. I'm plenty rich and love my job. Maybe you're just trolling me!? Maybe drunk? Can't tell...

No offense taken on any counts. Like noise said - i'm big into shelf candy and I really am liking the cases - especially the snapcases. However, i've had quite a few nasty (warped, wrinkly) old-style cases show up already - like 50% ratio.

Between the varying artworks, varying case-styles, and cost difference on region, while there is some gorgeous stuff, there is almost no uniformity to it. So from a shelf-candy perspective, I almost prefer the neo miniboxes or shockboxes. If all games were snapcases and all in good shape, it would be AES handsdown on that count, but it just isn't.

From a gamer perspective - I like both AES and MVS. One is legit arcade hardware so I like that, the other is top end homecart, so I like that.

What I know for sure right now is that I can't continue to do both - so I need to choose one or the other now that some dups are appearing. So, like (Ghegs I think?) earlier in the thread pointed out - am I really going to pay 10K+ to get all the legit Metal Slugs, etc. I don't think I would do that now that i'm into this a bit, so that means either go with a mix of AES/MVS (not my style, just don't enjoy that) or go all in on the AES, or tell myself, "You tried it out (AES collecting) and just wasn't exactly what you wanted."

The one thing I really do like though is the steady value, unlike current gen stuff or even some retro stuff, the value is pretty constant and I can get just about everything out that I put in, if I decide for sure to just stick w/the MVS route.

No harm and I never meant to offend

The trolls swim mighty deep on the Neo boards, must have rubbed off on me.

Real talk about COD in general though, variety is a great thing haha

You hit the nail right on the head. Fact is, SNK treated the US home market like an afterthought almost immediately. Sometimes I wonder if SNK USA even had anything to do with the manuals and inserts when they were localized. Look up the back cover of "last resort" for an example. They did try to get organized with the "bigger better badder" dog tag spines. They're corny and I love them.

But folks collect AES because they truly are uncommon. It's a great history of a boutique-style company selling to a hard core crowd, and we'll NEVER see anything like it again (save for downloadable games and Indie studios pressing CDRs for the Dreamcast)

Personally, I collect primarily American AES, with a couple JPN titles that I'll never afford the US versions of. And I've got MVS titles for the games that I'll never afford JPN OR US Versions of :)

As far as the "collector" argument? Hell yeah they're for collectors. Guess what? MVS carts are for collectors too. What would you call someone that keeps tons of huge carts lying around when they could easily be replaced by a multicart or *gasp* a PC with near-perfect emulation?

Why not just keep the amazing MVS collection as well as your smaller AES collection? You don't have to get crazy with it. My collection has pretty much stalled because anything I don't already have would be pretty expensive. And I'm fine with that.

One thing that always scared me about AES collection is the amount of fakes out there, especially on the big ticket items. If I spent like $3000 on Metal Slug there would always be that nagging thought in my mind wondering if it truly is legit. I'm glad I went the CMVS route, rather pay around $50 per Slug game than $1000. Not to mention that you can get the AES artwork for your MVS shockboxes so it looks virtually the same on the shelf.

Yep - for sure. On anything over $500 you really need to be able to establish provenance. I've avoided the high-high end for that reason, and i've avoided games that are valuable for rarity's sake alone. I like my small snapcase collection, 9 games, one shelf, all legit stuff.

Speaking of both the MVS and AES, there's a new MVS to AES converter being worked on by Furrtek; he's started an Indiegogo campaign to get funds for production of the first 30 converters and plans to produce more afterwards. Here's the link if anyone wants to contribute: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fusion-neogeo-mvs-to-aes-converter
