The circle pad for XL does work on US systems.

The Wii U version of the game has online play, and multiplayer is pretty integral to a lot of people in Monster Hunter. Otherwise they're just about the same.

You will want a circle pad if you get the 3DS version. Underwater fights are incredibly frustrating without a second analog stick.

I have a Wii with a pro controller, and I have a 3DS XL.

Now I don't have the circle pad thing yet. I know they make some that fit on the XL, but those are only made in Japan. Will they work on a NA 3DS XL? Also, if the Wii U version is vastly and definitely the best version I might be persuaded to wait and buy a Wii U for that.

Also price is a factor. At the moment the Wii version is only $18. While the 3DS version is $33. And then with buying a circle pad pro that would be an additional $30 or so.
I'd get the Wii version if price is your priority. Yeah, it's the "vanilla" version but I put in over 100 hours on the single player alone. There's no way you'll ever touch all the content in the 3 Ultimate version (unless you really really love it a and the game absorbs all your time).

Also, if you wind up not liking the game you're not out a lot of money on an accessory that 5 games use.

Edit: Wii version no longer has online play, iirc. But if you can't beat every monster solo then gtfo.

I bought the game recently and was finally able to try it tonight. I was going in completely blind, but it sounded like my kind of game.

I still think it could be, but damn is it clunky. The user interface is poor. Chat text is squished into the bottom left corner for no reason. I am sitting 6 feet away from a 50" TV and I still strain to read the text. The game throws a billion "tips" at me right from the start. The movement and controls feel so floaty and lagged.

Worst part, and I assume this is just because it's a new game, everything dies in a single hit. I'd have to get deeper into the game, but I don't feel it will be worth it for me. Is combat more than just running around and hitting x or a? Why does it feel so lagged? I would not be able to use the dodge ability since the guy seems to respond so slowly. Maybe because I am using a great sword?

It just seems so clunky. The UI, controls, design… it all feels weird. The fonts, menus, everything feels like it was made using some janky programming API and just ported to the Wii U.

I'll give it another try someday soon.

Give it some time, Monster Hunter really operates on a different wavelength than most games. Once you start hunting bigger monsters the game will get less automatic.

The controls take some getting used to, but everything is the way it is for a reason. Greatsword is by far the slowest weapon in the game and one of the hardest to use effectively (but in exchange it deals absolutely massive damage). I don't think I'd recommend using it while learning the basics. Learning monster patterns has a lot to do with learning how to move around and navigate hazards effectively. Rolls feel like they have long recovery, but when you start learning how to use their invincibility frames to get through enemy attack animations you start to see their intended risk/reward nature.

I also had negative feelings about Monster Hunter the first time I played it. After getting through the silly early quests and experimenting more with weapons I enjoyed using the game really grew on me though, so I wouldn't give up on it just yet.

Give other weapons a try. I hated GreatSword, but I quite enjoyed Lance and Switch Axe in the Wii original. They do all play quite differently.

The controls are never really fast though. The game is more about precision than fast paced action.

Some of the later monsters take a LOT more than one hit to die. Killing some of them within 50 minutes is a real challenge.

I snagged the (digital) Wii U version when it was on sale on the eshop. I just got to the Flooded Forest and I am really enjoying this game so far. Long sword is my preferred weapon; I was using Lance at first but found it difficult to handle more than one monster at a time with that weapon.

Question about going to the other island - the one with it's own town and quests, etc. - when should I be doing that? Is that endgame kind of stuff or should I be doing that as I go along or does it matter at all?

Bit of a bump, as this is all I have been playing lately. Played MH since the first game came out, but for the first time ever, my gf is actually playing the game too. And, we have a friend crashing on our couch as he transitions from military to civilian life, and he too has the game.

So, basically, everyday I come home from work and hunt giant monsters in a group for 6+ hours. It has been bliss, haven't been this into a non-shmup game in some time.

So, our group just reached High Rank quests online, and I just finished the offline story, which unlocked HR there as well. Rocking the Great Sword, as I always have.

Anyone still playing this fairly old game? Getting that hype ready for mh4?

Yeah, the game really takes its time to get going, but once it does it is impossible to put down. Whats weird it, it feels like all the boring stuff is really necessary, to get you into the unique groove of this game.

What weapon do you use? I'm sure you'll pick it up quick after 200 hrs in the Wii game.

Also, fuck Ceadeus. That fight made me rage. Sloppy 3ds camera controls + water fight + GS =
