Well, I've always told people I'm going into the future kicking and screaming. To me, the problem with digital-only releases of anything (movies, tv shows, music, games, whatever) is that if a company abruptly decides to pull something and not sell it anymore, it's potentially gone forever, at least as far as not having to pirate it to get it. At least if there's a physical release you'll always be able to track it down regardless of whether it's still in print or not.AppleQueso wrote:Honestly saying that digital releases don't "count" is a pretty antiquated way of thinking.

It has? Just because people are buying them doesn't mean they're staying locked. I have a few friends that unlock every e-book they buy. They aren't pirating them, but they're making it so they can read them on different devices. I'd bet that I know people with stuff from Itunes that is being played on stuff other than an Apple device too.isiolia wrote: Still, simple fact is that the sales model has worked for basically every other software market already (and music, and ebooks, and so on).

Can't see this officially happening. But if it does, no sale.

It's the model Steam uses, it's the model that iOS/Android use, it's the model that people are effectively agreeing to when they purchase things on iTunes, Kindle, etc.Hobie-wan wrote:It has? People might be, say, burning iTunes purchased music to a CD to rerip or play in other devices, but they aren't expecting to walk into a music store to trade that CD-R in for credit either. There's no "used MP3s" section of iTunes. "Unlocked" media being distributed simply becomes pirated, not a preowned marked.
That, to me, isn't the same issue, since there are unauthorized copies of practically any distribution method. My point is more that many millions of consumers have seen that they're purchasing non-resellable media, and been okay with it enough that they still bought it anyway. Expecting some huge exception to that trend just because it's now applied to "full price" console games just seems off.
Using that distribution model, in and of itself, won't hurt the next gen consoles any more than it hurt the iPhone. If people are sold on the device itself, they'll still line up around the block to buy one.

Yeah, i've officially decided that if this is the way of the future for consoles, than i'm out of the "modern" gaming scene for good. I'll stick to this era and previous only.
The one exception is if the gaming companies have similar deals to what steam has. Games at 75% off? I can do that.

Makes sense though. Honestly I think people won't have huge problem with this idea as long as prices go down.DinnerX wrote:Every gamer has his sale price it seems.
