It is the game that introduced me to the series, and it remains one of my very favorite games. A lot of people like IV, but it is more difficult and less accessible than VI in my opinion.
We allmost have 1 vote for each game i'll go with VI. I though about VII but thanks to the internet i know every plot twist, death and even what the final fight is supossed to mean. All i know from VI is that kefka becomes a super badass boss battle... and that battle can be awesome.

If it is between VI and IV, I vote for 6. I haven't got much experience with it, but I've beaten 4 and thought it was a bit average.
FF5 is also my favorite of the Final Fantasy games, but you may not like it if you haven't played other RPGs before.
If it's between FF4 and FF6, it depends on what you're looking for. FF4 has better, more challenging, somewhat balanced gameplay. FF6 has some great storytelling, visuals, music, and exploration, but the battle system is completely whacked. I liked both.

You guys keep talking about IV, and I'm wondering what Damm would be playing it on. Because if it's the SNES, IV really isn't that challenging. Other ports with the original difficulty, sure. But the SNES IV is toned down a fair bit.
