Yeah, but flip that scenario and let's pretend one of the faculty decides to go off his or her rocker. Shooting fish in a barrel.Breetai wrote:Expensive idea, but...
...what if the main office at the front of the school had a panic button, kind of like how banks have one where they just push it and it alerts the police to come ASAP? This panic button would lock any doors in the lobby area, thereby confining anyone in that area to the lobby. It would also start a 1-minute timer to lock all other doors leading to other parts of the school, thereby minimalism access to other parts of the school. Teachers would also have a panic button which would instantly lock their classroom door (or the door to whatever room, such as gym, cafeteria, shop, music room, etc.). Install bulletproof glass on all school windows.
Yeah, maybe that's extreme and would cost too much, but it would make schools more secure. If banks can have something similar, why couldn't schools? Kids are more important that a bunch of paper money.

Almost every school in the United States has a lock down drill. Each school district has their own drill procedures with security codes and passwords. Hopefully we'll learn that this school practiced a lock down drill which prevented more casualties.
But, ugh. The thought of walking into a school to see dead children littered around turns my stomach. Had to be a nightmare for the first responders.
edit* Just read a bunch of tweets from "celebrities" who are full of knee jerk reactions. "We need FREE Mental Health care!", "The second amendment should be abandoned!".
Terrible, terrible people will continue to do terrible, terrible things with or without more gun regulations. Remember pipe bombs, 9/11, the anthrax scare, and the unibomber? You think these guys seek mental health care? Part of life, and a crappy part at that, is that crazy jerkwads exist and they'll continue to do jerkwady things.

This is so tragic.
Killing children is an inconceivable evil.

A locked door isn't going to stop an armed lunatic. This kind of stuff has been happening for over 100 years. In the past decade, it has become a regular occurrence. You would think there would be some kind of additional required security measures by now. It's sick to think our elementary schools need security, but obviously it is so.Luke wrote:Almost every school in the United States has a lock down drill. I had to turn off the TV. I couldn't take reporters shoving microphones into children's faces and having them recount what they saw mere hours after the shooting.
My heart goes out to the families and the community. I don't have children, but I'm hugging my nephews extra hard the next time I see them.

That wasn't the scenario I was thinking of, but I was imagining a few ways where that idea I gave could have problems. What if some nut was locked down in an area and some students/stuff also happened to be in that same area with him. They would have NO place to go except to confront him head-on. Let a few be at risk to save the many, I guess...s1mplehumar wrote:Yeah, but flip that scenario and let's pretend one of the faculty decides to go off his or her rocker. Shooting fish in a barrel.

The story out of China with the knife-attacker proves that.brunoafh wrote:No amount of gun control can quell evil like this. It's a fucked up world we live in.
I don't know why the idea of training and arming teachers with weapons hasn't really been seriously put forward, what with all the school shootings over the past 14 years. They're public servants responsible for large numbers of defenseless children for hours each day. I'm not talking about something optional here, I'm talking about making it a mandatory part of getting a public school teaching job. Of course, the hiring process would include the same screens that keeps wackos from becoming policemen.
Obviously my idea would make things more difficult for teachers, but given what's happened it might be worth it.

90% of teachers are liberal this would not go over wellBoringSupreez wrote: I don't know why the idea of training and arming teachers with weapons hasn't really been seriously put forward, what with all the school shootings over the past 14 years.
