Yeah, I used a 360 pad. Keyboard would be tough, I think.Stark wrote:Xbox controller works great, click the right stick to lock on.Snatch1414 wrote:Bought this on Steam and I dunno I just can't get used to the keyboard+mouse controls. Bump. This game was fantastic. I've never played anything like it.

Did you ever plat this game? Working on it now but can't get more than an 'A' in chapter 5. I'm using Carl and Zack masks.Gamerforlife wrote:Ten chapters A+ ranked! Five more to go. I'm gonna platinum this sucker!

I did. For most levels, I abused the mask that makes your punches one hit kills and just tried to rack up combos with punch kills. My approach is reckless and I died a lot. I'm thankful that the game's ranking system doesn't penalize you for deaths. Death seems pretty much expected in Hotline Miami, so that was a smart move. Chapter 5 has two small areas where the enemies usually spawn in the same place. My method can work with a little memorization. If you kill everyone on each floor with a full combo, I'm pretty sure you'll get the highest rankgraffix_13 wrote:Did you ever plat this game? The Carl mask used to be guaranteed high ranks, but they patched the game before I started playing it to weaken the drill a bit, so I didn't rely on it. Speaking of which, I HATE when designers patch a game to weaken or remove something that players are using. Let the kids have their fun I say. That would my attitude if I was a game maker. I'm all about the giving, not the taking

I also A+ ranked every map and earned every achievement on Steam. I tended to favor the Zack frog mask for giving me more time to make combos, so I could chain longer combos together for a higher score(and earn the Combo King achievement for a 12x combo in one go. That police station is now a bloody mess).

Agree on the patching part. I think the drill use to give something like 3k per execution but that was fixed before it was even on PSN. I'm playing it pre-patch, just so that I can get "Get A Life" trophy done and over with.Gamerforlife wrote:I did. I've got A+ now on chapters except 10, 11, and 13. I'm using the Zack mask mostly now (Frog) because the combo window is open a little longer. I may try the Chameleon mask a bit more....but I know you don't get much 'boldness' bonus from using it.
What a great, fun game. Looking forward to the sequel next year!
Re: Anyone else looking forward to Hotline Miami?
Are those levels Hot and Heavy, Deadline, and Assault?
Assault, the police precinct, is probably my favorite level in the game. Wear Zack and do not stop moving unless someone is running to meet you. You can clear the entire first floor(15 guys) in one swoop. You can go melee, in which case start by hitting the first cop with the door, taking his nightstick, and then waiting for the second and the third to rush up so you can kill them and the first as he gets up, then move through the various rooms, killing as you go(I prefer this). If you go firearm, grab a gun, get to a room with one entrance, and fire a shot to attract everyone, then unload as they come in. Melee is more fun.
On the second floor, the easiest thing is to kill the first guy and then the second without others spotting, and then firing a single shot to attract more guys through the door of your choice so you can unload on them as they rush to you. Just be sure to switch weapons as you need to, because more than once I've fired my last shot only to be surprised by a final guy.
Third floor, go up first, kill both, then hook down, kill both cops, open the door and shoot the cop, then shoot the two from the next room who rush you, move in and kill the cop standing guard and then rush up into the conference room and kill the two in there. Grab guns and move back down the way you came, firing into the central room as you go and grabbing new guns to replace your empty ones. Once those guys are dead, pop into the top room with a shotgun and lay waste to the final guys. Finally, break the face of the guy in the cell and then strangle him good.
Just remember, don't stop moving. Do not hesitate, just commit. If you die, oh well, you respawn. Keep going until you've wracked up some awesome combos and then move to the next floor.

Re: Anyone else looking forward to Hotline Miami?
Thanks. Great, in depth write up. And yes, chapter 13 is "Assault" and chapter 10 is "Hot and Heavy".Ack wrote:Are those levels Hot and Heavy, Deadline, and Assault?

You're right....moving and killing lets you rack up big combs and points. I'll try your method on chapter 13. My concern is the guys with guns on the first floor who always blast me behind the glass. I'll just have to adapt and plan around them.
Have you tried the Chameleon mask much? I'm curious on to how much NOT getting the 'boldness' bonus at the end of the chapter affects your overall score. I've used the mask a few times, and it seems pretty effective...you can pretty much walk up to anyone without them being alerted. I'm going to try it out tonight and see how much it works (i.e. bonus point total at the end).
Re: Anyone else looking forward to Hotline Miami?
I tried every mask out at least once, though there were quite a few I didn't really care for. With Louie the chameleon, I didn't really notice much of a difference when folks would spot me, and truth be told sometimes my strategy involves intentionally getting spotted so I could lure guys away from groups. By the time I finished the game, I used Zack almost exclusively.
Re: Anyone else looking forward to Hotline Miami?
I haven't played since the early days when the scoring system was utterly broken. I'm glad to hear there is fun to be had in getting better ranks now. I need to play this again.
