At what age did you become a retro gamer?
Re: At what age did you become a retro gamer?
I've been into collecting since I was 7, back when I'd pick up NES games at Funcoland every other week or so. I didn't get really into it until I was 12 when I started getting old systems I didn't already have like the SMS and Genesis, and by the time I was 13 I had started collecting the pre-crash stuff. I've also been involved with the classic gaming community since I was 13 when I joined AtariAge and Digital Press in '03.

I had little interest in the 5th gen consoles when they were initially released so I kept on playing NES/SNES/Game Boy. I don't think that counts as "retro" though - especially when you consider that SNES and Game Boy games were still being produced.
I started collecting retro games and systems at age 27 - I'm a late bloomer.

I was about 20, and the latest generation of consoles just weren't interesting to me. I owned a 360 at one point, then it broke so i got rid of it and bought a ps3 and a wii. Well, none of the games they released for either system were appealing to me. I got a pretty good deal on a SNES and a bunch of games for like $30 shipped on eBay, and had a blast playing the games I grew up with. So, it all just kind of snowballed from there.

While I have been playing video games almost non-stop since 1980, I also had a similar moment. A bit after the 360 and PS3 hit, I retired my GameCube and PS2 and went back to the basics. I already had a large number of PS1 games to get through, so I decided to just focus on older games. I now only play NES, Super NES, and PS1. My only "modern" console is the Wii, and that is really only to play Skylanders with my daughter.AznKhmerBoi wrote:I started to become a retro gamer near the end of the gamecube/ps2 era, so i was about 19 or so.

I've had times where my interests swing towards 2D stuff, but it's always swung back after a while. I like old games, but I'd never want to miss out on a whole current generation.Zing wrote:While I have been playing video games almost non-stop since 1980, I also had a similar moment. If you wait long enough, current generation becomes retro too...BoringSupreez wrote:I've had times where my interests swing towards 2D stuff, but it's always swung back after a while. I like old games, but I'd never want to miss out on a whole current generation.

Re: At what age did you become a retro gamer?
Honestly that is a hard question
the first game I ever played was pacman, but didnt know it was an old game around 2003.
I got the ds in 2005, and people think things that are 7 years old, as old now, but Im guessing advanced wars isnt really considered retro
I probaly got into old games when I played legend of zelda a link to the past on the gba.
then I got a genesis, got a super nintendo(for action-rpg's) and later a dreamcast.
I only like about 3-8 games per system, Im picky when it comes too video games.

Re: At what age did you become a retro gamer?
I remember having a Genesis at age 4, I remember playing sonic 1 and thinking I was awesome when I beat the first level. I'm now 14 and last summer I became interested right after I sold off my PlayStation 1 with all the Spyro (collectors editions...) and crash games...,so now I get to re-find them! Since starting last summer I now have 140 games and growing!
