*slight improvement. But I'm really starting to understand the scoring a lot more now, so I feel like I still have a lot of improvement well within my reach.

Don't play with the shitty 360 dpad, if you're going to play with a controller go with the Versus Controller (micro switches give it a mini arcade joystick feel, think NeoGeo Pocket) - I love it.final fight cd wrote:how does the d-pad play with this? metal slug on xbla is unplayable with the shitty d-pad.

i'm guessing the joystick on the reg controller will work just fine than?xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:Don't play with the shitty 360 dpad, if you're going to play with a controller go with the Versus Controller (micro switches give it a mini arcade joystick feel, think NeoGeo Pocket) - I love it.final fight cd wrote:how does the d-pad play with this? metal slug on xbla is unplayable with the shitty d-pad.
The joysticks on the Versus controller behaves exactly like an 8-way directional arcade stick, perfect for precise diagonal movements; unlike the analogues on a 360 controller meant for modern 3D games.final fight cd wrote:i'm guessing the joystick on the reg controller will work just fine than?xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:Don't play with the shitty 360 dpad, if you're going to play with a controller go with the Versus Controller (micro switches give it a mini arcade joystick feel, think NeoGeo Pocket) - I love it.final fight cd wrote:how does the d-pad play with this? metal slug on xbla is unplayable with the shitty d-pad.
You are going to make me give it another run, aren't you?noiseredux wrote:Anyway, it's crazy to say, but Deathsmiles is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favorite Shmups. (It would be nice if my score reflected that though haha).
the artistic design is really only what drew me to it initially. Though visually it's fantastic -- and in contrast to something like Akai Katana, even when a million things are on the screen, I'm never confused as to what is background and what's bullets and what's enemies, etc. I just find it this perfect game for me. The music is amazing too. That might not be a selling point to anyone, but shmups are the only genre I really care about music. I love the level design, love the enemies, love the balance -- I think it's difficult but never impossible. Hell, you ca npick how to distribute the difficulty of the levels even. But I think what I love so much about the game ultimtately is its simplicity. On the surface it's got a simple 3-button scheme: shoot left, shoot right, bomb. And on the surface it's "shoot stuff, grab the skulls, score." And you can play and enjoy the game that way, going for 1CC if you like. But then underneath there's a totally complex scoring system with weird tricks to raise the score. There's just so much to do and learn and enjoy within something that presents itself as rather simple and inviting.dsheinem wrote: You are going to make me give it another run, aren't you?Deathsmiles is probably in the bottom 25% or so for me if I were going to rank Cave shmups. What do you like about it so much compared to other shmups (other than the artistic design, I assume)?
See I think that's indicative of a TON of games in the genre, especially in the last decade or so (and especially Cave titles). I forgot that, at one point, I did rank Cave titles. Have you played any of the ones above Deathsmiles on my list: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 90#p531890 ?noiseredux wrote:dsheinem wrote:But I think what I love so much about the game ultimtately is its simplicity.
