Easy. He only owned Nintendo growing up. :)
Haha, I dunno I only owned Nintendo consoles as a kid myself but all my friends had the Genesis, and I loved waking up before they did and playing Sonic games when I'd stay the night at their places, lol. Also I remember playing tons of Streets of Rage and Shinobi III back then, good times.

Yup yup btw Redifer I intensely read all your reviews the other day and was diggin it!! (the Phantasy Star stuff dragged me in) and now I have to get me a copy of Gun Valkyrie (xbox)..sorry if i spelt wrong my head hurts.

You definitely do. Gunvalkyrie is my favorite game on the o.g. XBOX. What an underappreciated gem, that one is.

I try my best to ignore the hype around older games for pretty much this reason. I played both Mario 64 and OOT when they were new though, so I probably have a very different perspective on them.
I've had Horseman's experience happen to me as well, it was with Ocarina of Time. I'd been hearing for forever that it's the greatest game of all time, made sliced bread obsolete, etc. So when I finally got it for myself in 2006, I was expecting the world. Played for about 20 minutes, and quit out of disappointed boredom to go play Goldeneye instead. It wasn't until I came back to it months later, expecting very little, that I started to enjoy it. By the time I had completed the game, I too thought it was one of the greatest games ever. And so, ever since, I don't get myself hyped up over games. It works out better that way.

The graphics were also pretty bad despite there being more than 64 colors onscreen in many locations. They just looked extremely bland and washed out. It tried to be über stylish, but in my opinion it sacrificed gameplay for that. Also, the sound quality was horrible (typical GEMS). The second game had slightly better sound quality from what I recall, but it still wasn't anything I'd want to listen to outside of the game.
I'd agree the sound quality is terrible, but I didn't think the gameplay was too floaty, certainly not as precise as a Sonic game though. Also, I don't think you really care for the style. I think it was intended to be very neutral and muted, considering the storyline. The animation quality is superb, due to the fact that Vectorman is made out of balls.

Anyways, I'll leave it at that, we all have our opinions. I just found it odd because almost everybody I know that's played it has at least liked it.

Well, here's another exception. I think those games are boring, drab and awkward to play.

The most glaring example for me is probably Ocarina of Time. Everyone says it's one of the greatest games ever made but I just don't see it. I much rather the older, top down Zeldas. I even like the DS Zelda games more. Blasphemy I know.

I'm a big fan of early Sonic games but for some reason Sonic CD never clicked with me. Is it the level design? I don't know.

Metal Gear Solid. Sorry it's just not fun for me. It's just stressful for whatever reason and the story is like a bad Tom Clancy novel that I could never get into.

Just about every classic RPG except a few odd ones here and there. It's just not my genre.

Now going back to the really classic games:

I've never been a big Pac-Man fan either. I have fun with it now and then but it's such an important classic arcade game that I've never been that into and I'm a huge fan of Namco's early cabinets.

Mr Do!, I'm not sure why. I just don't get this game.

I get really bored of Missile Command really fast. Granted it's a little funner if I have the actual cabinet and a track ball to play with.

I completely agree with Ocarina. I just didn't get it. The 2D Zeldas are so much more fun, IMO.

Mr. Do! looks like a little bit more complicated version of Dig Dug, and who doesn't like Dig Dug? I haven't actually played it yet, but I really want to.

And Missile Command is like my favorite game from that era! It's addictive as hell.

I just remembered I hate Street Fighter II, the controls are very clunky and the AI is ultra cheap.

Link to the Past is the only Zelda game I've enjoyed enough to finish. Ocarina of Time bored the shit out of me.
I'm known as ZebetiteGlitch or Zeza Von Thantos on other platforms.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
