Did you play the others first?

I played them 3, 2, 1.

Part of the reason I dislike sonic CD is because its spin dash is slow.

The Sonic Jam version, on Sega Saturn, adds in the spin dash to Sonic 1. Maybe you could play that one.

Yeah I've considered buying sonic jam just for that. Well that and the 3d area. I'm sure I'd really enjoy the game then.

Or I could always get the GBA version...

Though I love Chaotix too, heh.

Honestly, I never really got into Sonic CD or Knuckle Chaotix. I never owned either the Sega CD or the 32X. I know I need to rectify this, but are they truly worthy add-ons? Or will I be spending my money on sub-par games?

Well, the Sega CD does have some good games. The 32x is a hit/miss depending on what you like. It does have an awesome version of Virtua Racing, and Virtua Fighter is okay. The Doom port plays nice but sounds piss poor. Knuckles Chaotix is awesome, but whether these are worth it entirely depends on your tastes. The Sega CD has a little for everybody.

I really can't say anything different than what Ryan already said.

Personally I think they're both worth it, but I know a lot of people have little interest in the games available.

I wish I could give you a solid yea or nay, but its just one of those cases where you either feel it or you don't.

Ryan mentioned some great 32x titles, I'll also add that it has one of the best versions of Space Harrier, shooters Kolibri and Star Wars, and one of my favorite unique platformers in Tempo.

Sega CD has a nice mix of a variety of things, some Genesis ports with greatly improved sound, and a small pile of jrpgs. I know for some folks the SCD is worth it for the Lunar games alone.

My honest suggestion is to emulate and see what you think.

Agreed. I know I'll catch some flak for it, but I think Sonic 2 is the weakest entry in the classic series. (I don't consider 3D Blast part of the classic games btw)

I was just referring to the graphics. I prefer Sonic 2 to Sonic 1, and Sonic 3&K is the best. Sonic 2 was the first videogame I ever owned (unless you count the Sonic 2 Tiger handheld) and I like the halfpipe special stages over the spinning maze from Sonic 1. I also found it to be too hard to get to enough of the special stages especially considering their difficulty and lack of reward for winning them all. You only had 11 chances to access 6 of them. I also prefer the wider variety of levels in Sonic 2 to the 3 acts per zone in Sonic 1. Except for metropolis zone which has 3 acts because Sonic Team hates people who play their games.

@o.pwuaioc you definitely need to play Sonic CD. Play both the US and EU/J versions (for the different soundtracks), totally worth it. Grab KEGA Fusion if you haven't, best Sega emulator for their old stuff like we were saying earlier, and you can easily get Sega CD games over at edgeemu.net. Also worth mentioning the Sega CD has no copyright protection at all.

As others said above, I wouldn't even compare it to the 32x. I think the Sega CD is pretty legit and has a pretty decent library for sure. Definitely check out the Ecco the Dolphin ports too since those soundtracks are incredible stuff (Sonic CD US has the same composer).

Anyways, I think I've dogged on Sonic 2 with some of you as well when pitting it up against the others. I think I wish the stages were longer, and I prefer the three acts per zone from Sonic 1 / CD, even if Sonic 2 had TONS of zones, a lot of them were whatever. And graphically / art design wise yeah I think it's the weakest for sure, too bright, and I don't even like Sonic's sprite too much in that one. Think my ranking would be something like this:

Sonic CD
...
S&K+3
Sonic 1
Sonic 2

IE Sonic CD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! But yeah Sonic 2 is still awesome, just not as awesome as the rest.

I tried out Knuckles Chaotix earlier this year and I dunno... the partner thing kind of kills it for me, lol. I'll have to give it another go someday though.

Low blow man!

[likes Sonic 3D Blast]

Sonic 3D Blast is one I did legitimately tried, and didn't care for too much. Xeogred - do you prefer the Genesis version or the Saturn version? I've only played the Genny version, and, well, it's ok, but it makes me understand why some people do not care for Mario 64. I'll probably retry it if I come across it again, but I don't have a 9 pin USB adapter, so I sort of stopped emulating Sega stuff.

Why the Mario 64 comparison? Kind of odd to me as Mario 64 is true 3D, but Sonic 3D Blast is overhead isometric view stuff. Which is admittedly, weird for a platformer...

It's one game I've definitely come to terms with, that people just love it or hate it and it doesn't bother me. If anything though, I think it has an OST that's seriously pretty much on par with the greatness of S&K's, or just simply one of the best on the Genesis:

lol sorry for spamming Sonic music, the old stuff was just some of the best! That said yeah I'm only really familiar with the Genesis version actually (and here I am preaching to play both versions of CD, haha). I definitely want to play the Saturn version someday, the music is extremely different probably even moreso than the Sonic CD US vs J case from what I've heard.

I was referring more to the huge departure in terms of style. Even Yoshi's Island was a 2D "hop-n-bop" (well, kinda), but Mario 64 was a 3D collect-a-thon. Likewise, what little I played of Sonic 3D was also a "3D" collect-a-thon. But they both are major departures from what was otherwise an awesome series. Mario 64 I happened to like, Sonic 3D less so. I only played 1 or 2 levels, though, so I may give it another shot.

Ah, well yeah collecting the birds to clear a stage would probably be one thing I'd change about the game, though I don't remember it ever being a HUGE issue...but yes it has its annoying moments, lol.
