tried using Xpader, but NullDC won't detect it -- or even my keyboard for some reason?
NullDC just detects keyboard input, so it wouldn't be an issue with it not working with XPadder. However, if it isn't even detecting keyboard input, perhaps you changed the default controller settings?
Go to Options->Select Plugins
Now, under Port A, what does the first drop down say?
And while we are at it, go to Options->Maple->Port A->Config Keys for Player 1. Make sure you have keys mapped to control inputs.
I did look through that stuff yesterday. As far as I know, everything was set correctly for keyboard input.
BTW, this is exactly why I don't like dealing with PC crap. I always spend more time trying to set things up than actually playing a game. I just figured I'd give this a try because I was bored yesterday. Doubt I'll put much more thought into it now.

Had the exact same feeling with Final Fantasy VII for PC. Change that, patch this, do that...
I just sold the game in the end. Couldn't be bothered with it...

FWIW, working with emulators like this is much more difficult than running a game through Steam. I can't be arsed with emulators for anything after 16-bit, but I rarely need to do any configuring for most PC games.
