I once imposed a similar rule on myself - I tried limiting myself to 15 games on each console. It didn't work too well, since it really ties your hands on consoles with a staggering number of AAA games (eg: Playstation 2), but isn't effective as a limiting principle on consoles with a small number of games (eg: Neo Geo Pocket Color).

It might be better to set your limit as a percent of the console's total library; eg: your collection may not exceed more than 20% of the game's total library.
I used to have a rule that if I were to buy a system, there had to be at least 10 games I wanted to play on it (or I could hope to purchase in the future sometime). This was back in the day when I was not exactly making much money in high school.
I did break that rule when I saw Sonic Adventure on DC and bought both new that day.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

I'm also into books and the only trick that I know is to not buy a new book until you haven't finish the last one. Books are very easy to find compared to vintage games. When the chance pops up it's harder to not buy a rare game...
«Vectrexes», should be considered as a real word.

I'm getting better about the books. I've pretty much limited my buying to two times a year when the local libraries in the area hold a bi-yearly sale. I make a list and for two dollars for hardbacks and .50-1$ for paperbacks, I pick up continuing series I'm interested in and classics. Saves me time and money. And since all proceeds go to the library system it increases my good karma :D

As for comics....Well, luckily I only follow a couple of series, so no biggie....yet

It's quite possibly the biggest regret I've had in my life... Injecting practicality into my geekdom. As a result I've sold a dozen console systems, countless classic an' rare games, and even gave away games to my cousins for birthdays and holidays...

Games like Shining The Holy Ark and Guardian Heroes for the Saturn, Ikaruga for the Gamecube... (屮゚Д゚)屮 Gyah!!!

I once offered to my wife to sell my collection because I had them in storage for awhile. She simply shrugged and said, "Whatever." I started inventorying them all and I realized I couldn't let them go. Most likely I will never give it up.
