I've had to open up my PS2 several times to clean it internally to fix Disc Read Errors. However, I am still using the same console I got when it launched.
My Saturn's laser died. Ended up just getting another Saturn from a retro game shop.
My Wii got Smash Bros Melee stuck in it for about a month. Could still play the game, as well as all the downloaded games, but it refused to eject - it was just stuck in there. Nintendo charged out the ass to fix it, even though the system was less than a year old. I'm still pissed about that.
About the Dreamcast and playing burnt games - is it any burnt games, or just poorly burnt games? I ask because I'm wondering if high-quality media (I use Verbatim, which is supposedly the best you can get in America) used in conjunction with high-quality rips (I use TuxTheWise, because he seems to rebuild the games to be even better than my originals - his Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Jet Grind Radio will play music, while my original copies won't for some reason) will prevent the laser from going bad.

As far as handheld consoles are concerned I´ve only ever had two which are or went broken and without having read through all the 7 pages of this thread yet, I´m sure they have been mentioned many times and will:
1. Sega Game Gear : if it weren´t for them damn cheapo capacitors...it´s not even the user´s fault!
2. Nintendo DS phat : fell from a 70 cm high table on a double layer thick carpet = joint broken that holds the upper screen

Xbox 360 by far. I bought mine on launch and it has broken no less than 5 times in 6 years. It has finally survived past its warranty, so now that it has broken again, I am just going to buy a new one.
After that, my original xbox died once and my Sega Genesis has some a/v problems. I am not sure if it’s the system, cable or the tv faults.

I'm on my 5th xbox 360 now.
My most reliable console has been the N64. It was bought for me on the release day, never had any issues with it.

Considering I've gone through 5, yes 5, Xbox 360's so far and I'm still plugging away on my original Colecovision, I'd say the choice is clear.

Thankfully I never had and probably will never have an XBOX360. Genesis Model 2 has been unreliable for me, as have the PS1 and PS2 (more so the latter than the former).
As far as reliable goes, NES, SNES, and N64 all work like charms still. (I recently thought my N64 was broken until I realized I just forgot to put in the jumper pack

). Also, my original XBOX is still working just fine, which is apparently a quite unexpected thing.

My slim PS2. That thing is a disc-killing monster.
After that, probably my Gamecube, with multiple disc read errors... and my PSOne, which eats memory card data for breakfast.

3) PS, PS1 ,Psone, PSX, whatever - the original damn Playstation - This was the first system I ponied up my own allowance/birthday/confirmation money for and bought myself. I was so proud of this machine that I kept it in such a nice condition that Danny Tanner himself would think I had OCD.. About a year and a half into the life of the thing, games would stall and refuse to load. I would have to, (still to this day,) turn it either on it's side, or completely upside-down, depending on the game, to get it to load.. Sometimes a combination of the two, depending on how the game would load.. Sony made a revolutionary system, after making amazing audio/visual appliances.. But I feel they must have let the same people who engineered the original Sony Vaio work on the original Playstation, because the PS lens was about as blind as my 86-year old, senile grandmother who asks the refrigerator what it wants for its birthday..
2) NES - The pins are a monster to work with.. Even after replacing my pin-connector, I still find myself plugging and unplugging carts until they work.. I've gotten to the end of Zelda II, only to have the game freeze, and upon resetting the game once, see 3 unnamed laughing Links give me the finger. But it's such a great system, it's like the adorable little puppy you never want to be angry at... even though it just chewed up your only mint complete copy of Earthbound and took a dump in your work shoes. Unlike.....
1) XBox 360 - Look, Microsoft.. I get it! You've got a ton of stuff going on under the hood of your multi-media system that overheating and melting plastic parts are just a casualty of science. But c'mon! The fact that you were so defiant of your shoddy hardware engineering - trying so far as to charge upwards of $200+ for a replacement system as a result of your negligence of basic-elementary science (hot temperature make plastic gooey - this bad for computer's brain,) - and considering that there's really nothing aside from one or two unique IPs that could compete with a PS3, (which, I might add, could grill a burger and still play Motorstorm..), you should really take a good, hard look at the flaws in your current gen system when it comes time to draft the 720, or whatever your new Halo/Gears of War-player will be..

You described my feelings toward the NES perfectly. Even with a new Pin-Connector, yeah, the same issues. But it's such a great system that you deal with the BS to play it.

My N64 never worked right. It's a launch model, if that means anything.
